Or do I have to save them to HD, possibly fiddle with the format, all this, and then send them?

I'm relatively sure, after taking a snapshot you can choose "Send postcard" and fill in where you want the image to go.
The image is saved as a bitmap, which takes a bit longer to upload. Typically I save to HD, change the format to JPG (and resize/crop if I think it's necessary) then send it along.

I just confirmed that you can send a snapshot as a postcard, using the radio button at the top of the snapshot window. It does upload really slow unless you send a very small image. Most of the time I would prefer using the download to hard drive and seperate email function.
