Hi everyone really got the building bug and getting nice comments wondering now about maybe selling, don't want to get it wrong though: love using nice animations, textures & scripts which I got as freebies (wouldn't be able to afford custom made ones yet...) my question is, are there some animations, textures & scripts I could use in objects that I offer for sale, and how would I be able to tell which ones they are? Thank you for your help. Eirlys

When you get a freebie box of full permision textures or animations they are generally there so you can use them on items you make, and you can sell the items you make.
You know you can use them in items you sell by the fact they are full permission
Occasionally they have been taken illegally but if you go to a good well known freebie place like Yadni s Junkyard you should be okay.

The majority of freebie textures I've found in Yadni's Junkyard were ripped without permission from other video games.

To be completely honest, you're better off buying your textures from some of the more reliable texture creators. Then you know you're not getting ripped off ones, at a good quality, while supporting the creators.
I think Torley made some free ones.. so if you like for textures that have the Linden last name as a creator, then you're free to use those.

One thing about animations is that the creator name cannot be changed. I would contact the creator to see if it is ok for you to redistribute them.

If you want to come and have a look at my texture store on Tin Teddy island, find a box of textures that you think might come in handy, then IM me and tell me their name - and I will send you them free of charge.
All my textures are home-made by myself, using Photoshop and other fully licensed graphics programs and filters and are definitely not taken from any websites etc.
I would be very happy to help you get started if you think I have something that sparks your creative juices, Eirlys.
I am also not really an expert, but after nearly 5 years of selling in SL I guess I must know a few things, so if you have any questions on building, animating or texturing, do feel free to im me or skype me (I am elgyfu there too) - and I will be happy to help you if I can (actually, that goes for anyone else too, of course, hehe)

Thank you, Skell! I kept meaning to go looking for that thread and kept forgetting that I meant to do it... Maybe now I will get my two-prim barstools out for sale sometime this decade... Eirlys, I just picked up a bunch of free textures at NCI, and the GNUbie store offers some as well. (The ones at GNUbie may be L$1/bundle, which goes toward upload fees. If you are so strapped for L$ that even that isn't doable, contact me inworld and I can probably work something out with you.) I trust both NCI and the GNUbie store to check their stuff carefully to make sure it's legit. Come to think of it, I am pretty sure there was a package or two of animations at NCI also. I also know a texture store that has pretty generous Midnight Mania boards and Lucky Boards, as well as a daily gift for having them in your profile picks. When I started building, I took lots of classes and ended up with textures, scripts, and animations I wasn't sure would be okay to use in builds I meant to sell on. This is one of the things I've been sorting as I have started to put my creations up for sale.

Oh, I just remembered another related question: what about incorporating other creators' freebies into your work? A while ago, I picked up a free Greenspace Startup Kit by Higbee Protagonist on XStreet. It had full permissions plants, flowerpots, trees - and a sculpted water prim with moving textures. The kit appears to be for personal use, but there is no EULA included that restricts it to that. I built an indoor water feature around the water prim, and it turned out really well. My friends suggested I put it up in my XStreet store, and I'd love to - but is the water prim a showstopper? I've added the structure, mist, sound, and linked so that one of my prims is the root so I show up as the creator. I guess my options are: - go ahead and use the water prim and sell the waterfall; - buy a sculpted water prim and use a texture in my inventory and rebuild the waterfall; - IM Higbee and ask his permission to use the water prim in the waterfall I'm selling. (I've gone in-world to check. There is a notecard in the kit that includes this statement: "I hope that you will enjoy this little kit of freebies, designed to get the beginning landscaper on the ground. With few exceptions, you will find that the contents are full permissions, so that you can modify and copy them to your heart's content, and even give them away to your friends!" I welcome any input or advice.

I recently built (and put up for sale) my first building. Finding good textures became important for me. I did use some freebies - basic woods and metals. But mostly I used freebies from merchants who had for sale items, and mixed that with some textures from collections merchants were selling. One major detraction with freebies is the risk that you're using a texture people have seen a few million times already - so for anything of prominent focus I wanted a texture that cost me at least a linden. As for scripts, in my texture search I stumbled across a shop that had a giant wall of open-source scripts on the basement level: http://slurl.com/secondlife/Verbena%20Island/66/201/22 (Teq's Creations) - And that really changed quite a few things I was considering. I am still looking for a good teleportation system script. I -almost- have what I want. The only feature I still need to figure out is how to make it so I can link teleport pads together in linked sets: these 3 pads TP between each other, but those other 2 are not connected to the first 3 - even though they are owned by the same person and are the same object (with just a different notecard). I need to get into a scripting class... I just missed the one at NCI today...

From: Pussycat Catnap Which store is that? Could you send me the name? I didn't have it earlier when I was in this thread, but I was in-world for a couple of minutes... it is the USC Texture Tomb, by Eagle Wilder. The more I use his textures, the more I like them, and they're very reasonably priced. It seems like I went to the wrong place the last time I tried to find it in Search, but that could've changed or I could be misremembering. I've got a link to it in my Profile Picks.

Join these 2 groups:
Free Texture Library
Script Collectors
You will end up with a bursting inventory. Also, both groups warn members not to pass around ripped items. Those who do are stopped and warned. So, despite some people's alarm about such groups these are very legit. After all no one can completely control other people, anyway. But they do their best and I have only once or twice seen someone trying to give out a non freebie.
There are tons of free textures out there thanks to generous creators. A lot of freebie places have some but that's harder to find just what you need. Most texture stores run midnight mania boards (which usually are NOT to give out as free) and gift boxes of textures (which usually ARE okay to give out to others.)
As for animations - I would really like to find some free ones myself. I have sit poses but they are frozen in place. People want moving ones these days.
Even ones that won't break my bank would be nice. Until I can make my own. I have so many ideas.

Some advice on Original Texture Shopping

It seems like I went to the wrong place the last time I tried to find it in Search, but that could've changed or I could be misremembering. I've got a link to it in my Profile Picks. Please be aware that many of USC textures are ripped from the Internet and also re-sold without the permission of the original creator. While I have no issues with people incorporating *some* graphics from the Internet in some capacity in their creations for sale, I do take exception when people download graphics from the Internet and actually sell them to others. And don't get me started on those who buy texture packs out of world, upload them into SL and sell them as their own work without the permission of the creator. THE BEST WAY TO INDICATE TEXTURES ARE ORIGINAL is to look for consistency in styling and quality. If a vendor sells textures where the quality varies too much or the style is disparate, chances are that they are not the creators and you have every right to ask where they acquired the graphics from in the first place.

It is always best to be 100% certain that you have rights to the items you include in your creations in order to stay in compliance with copyright laws. In addition now that LL has indicated that they are going to take IP infringement more seriously you really do not want to run the risk of having critical parts of your creations go poof on all of the people who bought them from you due to database deletions. If your in doubt as to whether a texture seller is the creator of the textures they are selling, ask them how they made a particular texture. Which programs did they use? Just about all honest creators would proudly describe their methods. While a person that is faking it almost always sounds very vague. Or suddenly doesnt feel like talking. I create all my own textures and I have a few free items that I made in the lobby. I send out texture samples from time to time to my group members. But I never call them freebies. Because the popular usage of that word implies that they can be handed around freely by anyone. A eaula or a tos is not required to preserve copyrights. You may want to read this blog before including certain materials in your creations that you plan to sell. SL Content Management Roadmap

I did not know that about USC. It's all I will say here since it's been named specifically. I guess I haven't spent much time there though - it is very slow rezzing for me.
I do notice some shops sell textures that I could swear I have seen in freebie packs, and that look like pictures lifted from Google. Those same ones add a few abstract ones they whipped up themselves, but which almost always have bad tiling problems.
I keep looking for really high quality ORIGINAL textures and it's difficult to find them.

Infiniview Merit: Exactly. It never hurts to ask and really I think most people feel better knowing they are using legitimate components in their creations.
Melita Magic: I do not like to criticize too much, but I will be vocal when I know people are being taken advantage of. As for reputable texture places:
Infiniview Merit definitely has some outstanding textures.
Textures R Us is convenient because they do display many creators' work, however, they have (perhaps unknowingly) sold ripped and unauthorized works before -- so do track the creators back to their original shops to view all of their offerings.
Porky Gorky has some outstanding textures -- not to mention some of the most incredible creations.
Alimah Destiny makes some lovely texture packs. Interesting variety actually.
Stog Alter creates some beautiful textures.
Accel Foxtrot of Voodoo Shuffle/ACCEL is just spectacular.
And I'm sure there are many others (there are a few I am forgetting but am not logged in world to check my landmarks).
But don't be afraid to interview the creators.

I ran a texture shop for many years in SL. All my family comtributed. Some may remember textures after dark,
We finally packed it up and closed. Our stuff was appearing all over the grid in freebie boxes and being resold. The DMCA process is cumbersome and expensive if it actually goes to court. It just wasnt worth the anguish anymore.
To all our former customers THank You.
TO the thieves may you rot in .....

Elric thank you for the recommendations. Darkness sorry to hear of your experience. Some pass textures around out of ignorance, but many who do this, do it with a "so what" attitude.
Eirlys you are welcome.

while naming names I am surprised nobody mentioned 3D
If you want to find good textures search for them on Xstreet and on the inworld all Search .. you wil be able to tell who has the quality stuff fast.
Also look at some of the better looking products that seem to be selling.. find out where really good builders buy their textures if they don't have time to make their own..

Also look at some of the better looking products that seem to be selling.. find out where really good builders buy their textures if they don't have time to make their own.. The problem is that certain merchants resell quality textures that are not theirs and that they have no permission for doing so. A potential buyer might be led to believe that said merchant IS the creator, when they are not. XStreet is no assurance that textures are being legitimately sold either -- I see many being sold against the original creator's license. I've reported some and they are still there. Unfortunate but true. Mind, when someone's creation loses its textures, they'll know pretty quickly they were had and bought unlicensed textures. It's lose lose except for the con artist.
