But when you update your signature, does this not change all your previous posts? I know your avatar picture changes in previous posts, but I haven't tested this with the signature. I've only had the one signature so far.
If it does change, it would be simple matter to fix your sig if the forums start working as intended.
Yes.
But imagine in 6 months, LL decides to fix the forums. And in doing so, they break the cruddy link hack that you've used in posts and in your signature.
You can easily change your signature, assuming LL still allows us to have signatures.. assuming you're still participating in the forums at that time.
But every time you use that trick in a post, you're using broken bbcode. That may be a hundred posts, per person, a hundred links, per person.. that no longer work.
You may think "that's fine, no one reads old posts".. but you'd be wrong about that. In fact, the reason LL has kept this broken BBCode forum for the last couple of years, is PRECISELY because people do use search, they do look for answers, and they do read old posts. There's years of collective wisdom stored here in these forums, and LL doesn't want to delete all of that if it can be avoided.
Every post you make, adds to the information pool, the fertile field from which wiki pages and knowledge base articles have been, and will be written.
Just because the link you post today may only be answering one person's question, right now.. doesn't mean that you shouldn't consider that that same answer may be useful for hundreds of people, weeks and months from now.
Many forum packages include "data converters" that will go through all the sql entries, and reformat the text based on the new forums new capabilities.. And there's no way of knowing how any new system will translate [img]tags, but it's a safe bet that any translation script they use, won't know when you meantto display an image, versus when you really were just cheating to make a clickable link.
Please obey the bbCode standards, or avoid using bbCode altogether.
