Its really easy to accumulate thousands of items. I've been sorting it out but is it possible to download the inventory and do it that way? like organising folders in windows explorer?

Thanks

To actually organize original, non-copy or non-transfer items...No.

I recommend boxing up things you don't use.

Or even box up things you do use.... and use something like hippoINVENTORY. It will search the box and give you whatever item you search for. You just need to be on build/script-enabled land to use it.

Probably you know... but just in case you don't - the standard suggestion is to open a second inventory window (from the inventory menu bar, click File > New Window). This makes it easier to drag folders and items around.

Also, deleting junk that you don't like or won't use is a great idea.

And look at this page of Inventory Management Tips:

haha. Well, if you boxed up the pool table....

hippoINVENTORY is a neat tool that will search the contents of the objects the inventory script is in. It's faster than sitting there and waiting for the contents to load. I used it to box up all the hair I don't regularly use, like the mega-color packs (I usually just wear one color). I will also use it to box up other random stuff, like spare vehicles, furniture, etc.

I use the THinC boxes for items I don't use often but they basically need to be rezzed in world in a permanent location, otherwise it would be cumbersome to rez the box then search even if I was on build/script enabled land.

Is the hippoInventory something that searches for inventory without having to rez it??

I may have found my Christmas gift to myself!!!!

Sorry, the box has to be rezzed before it can search.

I still find it immensely useful only to have my extra stuff sorted in one box as one inventory item instead of several hundred different objects for my inventory to count. I just need to yank out the box and then tell it to look for a certain color and style... or whatever. If a box only has a few items, it doesn't make much sense. But because I stuff the boxes full to the point that loading takes a long time, it's very useful.

That's a point. I've been keeping excess inventory in THinC boxes at home sorted into four broad categories, but this is inventory I rarely use, seasonal, copies of items in regular inventory, etc.

I have some outfits in just a plain prim in my inventory to save space, but then rarely wear them because it's a bit of a hassle to rez it, open it, copy to inventory, etc. The ability to put a ton of items in one prim and hippoInventory sorts them is great.

Will definitely have to get one. Thanks for mentioning this!

I'm pretty sure there is a demo of the system. Go to Hippo Technologies island and pick it up, try it out.

This freebie will read your SL inventory file from your PC and let you save it as xml which you can then bring into Excel and organize, sort, whatever. It will not directly interact with your true SL inventory, but I have used it to more easily find duplicate items to delete and to help create a list of inventory actions I want to take when I get inworld next.

I have over 9000 (actually way over 9000) items, sorted in folders that i try to never contain more than 6-12 further folders, it became quite logarythmic and starts to overshadow Linnaeus biological classification.
Theres is a "domain" called "textures" that goes down to family==fur gennus==red Species==seamlessPattern and similar classification stuff, but it changes quickly and unpredictable and every folder contains a "!!!" named folder (to be on top), that contains "insufficiently furter unclassified / yet so far but further unsorted stuff" every now and then.

Anyone got some dynamite for my inventory? I finally cleaned out over 3k in items, got it down to 15k, then some how it was all returned and multiplied for some odd reason after deleted numerous articles.

There are a number of HUDs that you can put stuff like textures and megaprims in and other stuff as well. And when you wear you can chat it and/or use blue dialogs to get out the stuff you want.

My inventory is just under 3500 items and I've been in SL for over 2 years. So inventory organisation is, perhaps, one of my SLuccess stories!

I regularly have clear-outs of unwanted stuff and I load little-used things, especially textures, into boxes, which only count as single items in inventory. I name them INVOBOX and give them a number.

The Lindens are always grateful for trashed items because they recycle them as landfill to create new islands and mainland sims.

Something I figured out - I put large numbers of older photos (I take tons) onto multi-image photoframe displays that are 5x5 images on a grid, then label them and save, deleting the original pix.

I have a top level folder that I name "Crap [Date]" where [Date] is the last time I actually looked in that folder. That's where 99% of all new, incoming stuff goes. If I log in and notice that [Date] is more than 2 weeks ago, I'll sit myself down and sort for an hour or two. I'm still at 6000 items after 2 years.
