OK, I think I've figured out why the inworld maps take so long to update - because our glorious Linden Overlords are checking them for things they don't like and editing the images before allowing the general populace to see them.
Let me elaborate - on Cavettaz sim, we have a structure with a footprint of about 50m x 20m, which we've textured to look like a Roulette table top. Check it out if you like, it's there at the north end of the sim. Inworld, you'll find that it's covered in danceballs, and is actually a club - nothing against TOS or the "gambling ban" (sic) - just an innocent club where people can come dance.
Now check the map for that sim - all of the textures of the club floor have been greyed out, or perhaps "blurred out" would be a more accurate description. And this has been so for the last three iterations of the map! Additionally, other, smaller items (1m x 1m pads, all of the other structures on the sim) are shown in reasonably good detail. So, apparently, our Linden Masters, in a frighteningly Orwellian manner, have decided to re-invent the truth, or to airbrush out the bits of reality they don't like.
In many ways, this is rather entertaining - imagine that they actually have someone in their employ whose sole task is to check, and edit, thousands upon thousands of sim photographs in case there's something there which they might find distasteful. Even more entertaining is the heavy handedness with which these these edits are made.
I wonder .. has anyone else experienced this, and more importantly, did you change your build/texture, or stand defiant, proud to have a Grey Spot of Linden Stupidity (tm) on your map?

Textures on prims have always been averaged to a single color, in my experience. When I had a runway in Caldbeck the prims with the TD stripes were just a lighter grey than the prims with nothing more than the center line. In either case, you couldn't see the texture itself, just an "average color".
I played around with that for a while. Never could get a texture to show up, even on a megaprim.

Right. That's why the huge "lettering" one sees on the map is built out of prims (and I *think* necessarily non-sculpted prims). To make the roulette wheel show up, it would have to be diced up into separate "pie-slice" prims.

What the previous poster said. It tends to simplify colors, and does't exactly give you a lot from textures.

I believe only flat system colours applied to prims show up, as everyone as said textures on prims don't.
However, I know someone scripted a full sim once with 'textured' prims to make a birthday card and it showed up.

Tried to play with textured prims for lettering, they all showed up as Circles on the map.
The letters on my SURL are all Prims.

Yep - we had to make our Shelter sign out of individual prims to get it to show up clearly on the map.

Yep again. In Suisun you'll find a smiley face. A neighbor (gone now) apparently saw that and tried to put the logo for their place on the map. The logo was a blue circle with some white swirls inside to look like a face. The problem was they did it with just a texture and not by making the swirls out of individual prims. On the map, it was just a light blue box. --Hugsy

You can probably thank map griefers, as big textures used to show up. Or it might just be necessary to get the map to show up now that it's so large.
