Does moving sims around on the grid break landmarks?

I think the question is adequately expressed in the title, but to elaborate: if an estate owner has LL move sims around on the grid to different locations, does it break existing in-world landmarks?
I seem to remember that it does - it certainly changes the global co-ordinates, and landmarks store those - but I am not _sure_, and it is one of those things that is a little hard to test.

It used to, but now LMs move with the sim.

There's a thought. Surely not?
I've used LMs to places only to find they are not there any more (I will NOT start ranting about Grim's Keep not being my garden!).

I just checked, LMs *are* based on region name.

Well it certainly has retained the information on my mainland. However, as my TP point is set at 758 that is where people arrive if they use that LM.
Good job (since a lot of people seem to have the LM and the classified, whilst cancelled, seems to still be visible to some people (but not to me and neither was I able to sort out the group for it (joined, could not see it in my list but was on my profile, LL had to be involved to get me the hell out of there) and my ban lines work to 760 ...
Something very odd! So I guess there is the potential for borkage.

Neither sim name changes nor sim moves will break landmarks now. Amarin Island got moved recently (twice) and the landmarks all still worked. In fact, when the first move happened, I wasn't initially aware that the sim had moved. I thought a new sim had arrived to the North of the one I was in, when the fact was that the sim I had a LM for had been moved to the South of that other sim. I have had landmarks for the "Kitsune" sim that still worked after it was renamed to "Kitsune Valley".

OK I just found information indicating LMs are linked to region name, so perhaps when region name is changed, associated LM assets are redirected/renamed?

OK, just did an in-world check. I extracted a LM from a notecard, for one of the first two sims that I ever built, Nohona Isle. That sim has changed hands twice, and after the first sale it had been renamed to "Caribbean Escapes". My LM has been in that notecard since the time when I was still terraforming that island. On draggging it to active inventory, the "Location" information in the LM updated at once to read "Caribbean Escapes", although the description line remained unchanged.

I've moved islands 3 times, and landmarks continued working, but profile Picks to those islands seemed to break in all cases.

Oh, that isn't good, given their influence on search and that people rarely check their profile picks to see if they are up to date.

According to somthing in the open source wiki, landmarks used to go by global coordinates but were changed to work by region names. It didn't say when this change happened though. It does say that both old and new kinds of landmark still work. I would hope that part of the $100 fee that is charged when a region is moved or renamed would go to them updating the database...there is probably some kind of program they can run that would update whatever references they use to keep the LMs functioning. I seem to recall when this topic came up a few months ago, someone pointed out that while LMs will continue to work after a region is moved or renamed, profile picks do not. eta: Ack, Wildefire beat me to it -Atashi

In October I renamed (and fully rebuilt) an island without moving it and people who had landmarks to it under the old name kept popping up at the coordinates that used to be the welcome area of the renamed island.

Having just been part of a community that moved a sim this weekend, no the LMs will not work for the new sim. You must replace your landmarks.

Usually within a couple of days they work again, but it could take a little time for the database to update to match the move.

Yes, landmarks DO break for a short period, but they start working again once the database catches up. This is worth noting.
