For those unaware there is a new SL Q & A Yahoo style site starting sometime this last week of the month.

Many of you have heard about the Second Life Answers project. There has been some great progress due to the help of volunteer beta testers. The new blog software has had some bugs and these testers helped pin point those so they could be resolved quickly. There are still a couple being worked on but we are now able to say the target date for the Second Life Answers launch is the last week of this month :)

Second Life Answers will open with basic features and new features will be added as they become available. The Answers site will be seeded with a number of questions and answers prior to launch. We consider this a “soft launch” to allow the Second Life community a chance to log in and try out the site. Particularly for the language channels, this time will help us determine what the volume of questions might be and what changes, if any, the categories may need. So, please expect there to be modifications and improvements as this exciting new program takes its first steps.

Once it’s live, we will automatically add all current members of the Second Life Mentor group (and beta group) to a Volunteer group on the Answers site. This group will aid us in the future if we decide to add in new, volunteer-targeted features as the Second Life Answers program matures and will appear on your Blog/Forum profile page. You are of course welcome to leave the group at any time, but we hope you’ll stick around and help us with the newest volunteer program.

I was wondering what peoples views are on it, will it be an asset to SL, or will it become a White Elephant? as the only people at present allowed to answer there are Mentors.

Should it be opened up to the community at large to answer questions that the new folks ask, or just left to Mentors to answer? Are the questions, that will probably be asked, not already answered in the SL wiki? Will this make RA obsolete?

Just a few thoughts from me :)

Regardless of where the information is already available, people will ask the questions. There's a sticky of FAQ at the top of this forum, but people ask the same questions here over and over. Just human nature, I guess: most people will ask a question rather than look up the answer.

By keeping it restricted to Mentors, they will at least be able to maintain the signal-to-noise ratio of the answers. So it could prove to be an informative read, rather than an entertaining one.

I doubt it'll make RA obsolete, unless LL use it's existence to justify removing RA.
