Turning off Local Voice

Is there a way to keep voice active, to be able to initiate or receive private calls, but to also keep the local voice channel turned off?

As it stands now, if local voice is bothering me, I turn voice off altogether. Having to go through editing preferences for this each time annoys the heck out of me.

You can turn down the volume individually for each speaker. If you click on the little box just to the left of your Talk button lock, it will open an Active Speakers box. You can highlight a person's name by clicking on it, and then use the volume slider to turn down that person's voice, all the way to 0 if need be. If you're in a busy place, you can tell who's talking because the dot next to his name will have the little green waves coming out of it. Red, even, if it's distorting.

Or, you can just turn the volume slider for Voice down altogether. The up arrow just to to the right of the speaker icon will open up a control panel with the different volume sliders on it, one of which is Voice.

I keep voice on and the voice master slider near 0. Just enough to catch if someone's saying "hi" to me. Other than that, yeah, I'm not interested in hearing people breath, sniff, snort, cough, and chew... Which is the majority of sounds that come across when I turn voice up. (>_<;)

So it seems like there is no way to just disconnect from the local channel? It's either local or private, you have to disable voice altogether for neither? *sigh*

Nope. The people who designed how SL implements Voice couldn't concieve of any reason why anyone wouldn't want to dive in and use Voice in every way possible - even after hundreds of Residents proclaimed they did not want and would never use Voice Chat.

One way is to turn off SL Voice and use Skype, and tell your friends your Skype ID. Skype has the advantage that it survives SL crashes and works even if you're currently on an alt.

Also, for me the voice quality is better, though I know that is not true for everyone.
