Going by the Jack Linden thread...

From: someone
[11:36] Jack Linden shouts: There are 13,000 Openspaces, several hundred of which are Linden owned.
[11:55] Jack Linden shouts: there are 32000 regions in all
[11:56] Jack Linden shouts: 5,000 of those are Linden Mainland

13k openspace sims (16/server) require 813 servers. The remaining 19k full sims (4/server) require 4750 servers.

So.. About 5600. Probably closer to (or over) 6000 to cover backups and such.

It's one full sim per core or four openspace sims per core. All the servers are either class 4 or class 5 which both have 4 cores.

The old class 3 hosts had, I think, 2 cores. Those are all gone from the grid now, though.

Hardware
2000+ Servers in 2007
~6000 Servers in early 2008
Plans to upgrade to ~10000 (?)

4 sims per machine, for both class 4 and class 5
Used all-AMD for years, but are moving from the Opteron 270 to the Intel Xeon 5148
The upgrade to "class 5" servers doubled the RAM per machine from 2GB to 4GB and moved to a faster SATA disk
Class 1 - 4 are on 100Mb with 1Gb uplinks to the core. Class 5 is on pure 1Gb
