When a person asks for help with a crashing computer program, it's is generally useful to provide certain pieces of information.

You can get some of these pieces of information by doing Help / About Second Life, assuming that SL runs long enough for you to do that.

The make and model of your computer is a good starting place, like mine is a Gateway 9310S. That info lets folks look the system up if they are in the mood, or maybe someone has one and is familiar with some quirk of that system.

The processor model, speed, etc. is good to know; mine's a Pentium 4, 3.2 Gigahertz, dual core.

How much memory, i.e., RAM memory, main memory - mine's 1 Gig. A gig in this context means approximately a U.S. style billion bytes of memory.

The make and model and amount of memory of your video card - I have an ATI Radeon x800 with 256 megs of video ram. A meg means roughly a million bytes of memory.

What type of internet service is important for SL, I have cable, the other choices include DSL, dial-up, satellite, and fiber-optic.

Whether there's a router involved is important, whether it's wired or wireless, and what it's model number is. I don't recall the model number of my router, but I could find it if I felt like getting up and walking into the living room. It's wired, and it's the cheapest CompUSA router they had.

The type of modem can be important, mine is a Motorola Surfboard 4200.

The exact version number of the video drivers can be useful. I don't recall that, but I would find it out by going to control panel, display, advanced , adapter, I think it is.

The exact operating system - XP pro SP2 in my case.

What anti-malware programs are running is also good to know.

The more of this sort of information one can provide the better.

Also, if there are any error messages being generated, the exact verbatim text of the error message is useful.

There's a log file called secondlife.log that can be useful when crashes occur, this lives at
C:\Documents and Settings\&username%\Application Data\SecondLife\logs\secondlife.log . It's a text file that can be read with a simple text editor like notepad; usually just the last ten lines or so would be all you'd want to put in a post.

Oh, the exact precise versions of Second Life involved, there are so many versions it's important to know the exact version - that shows up in Help / About Second Life.

Do you login to the same sim every time? What operating system are you running? If Windows, try clearing your cache, or deleting the following directory:

c:\documents and settings\{your name here}\Application Data\SecondLife\Cache

These are all the textures that your computer has loaded from Second Life, like the textures on the wall of a building, or textures of hair or clothing, etc. Some of these files may have been corrupted. By clearing your cache, you are telling your computer to re-download all these files again. It may take a while to "rez" stuff; things may be gray, but this might help.

Also, try detaching EVERYTHING YOU ARE WEARING (hair, shoes, skirts, mystitool, flight feather, etc.) Sometimes these become corrupt for whatever reason, and might cause you to crash.

I was blaming SL for crashing when in fact it was my DSL modem. It would actually disconnect from the internet every few minutes. Because I could not see the lights I didn't know it was happening. Everything on my machine was upgraded and up to date as well.

Crash
03-23-2008 14:21
I'm having the same problem. Is something going on with SL? Was it the latest version launch? I've never had any problems crashing until the latest version of SL was released. I've had the same computer and SL account since 09-06 and only now am I having crash problems. I'm fine on sims that have very low population but as soon as I hit somewhere where a few avatars are hanging around, I get hit with lag a few times then just crash...and log report generates.

If anyone has any ideas, please let me know.

Thanks.

Here are a few of my pc specs:
Windows XP Home SP2
ATI Radeon x800gts 256mb, latest drivers released March 5, 2008, version 8.3 (just updated because of the crash problem, old drivers were doing the same thing)
1g Ram
AMD 3800+ single core

Oh, on a side note, I also access SL from a notebook and have no problems and I know for a fact the notebook's graphics processor is not supported by LL. Though everything loads as slow as sin.

First, welcome to the Forums.

Now... if only I had a clue how to help. :o Perhaps first things first: if not already done, it could be a quick fix to clear cache from Preferences and relog, perhaps a couple of times. Only a bit more intrusive is removing the whole directory structure under C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\SecondLife, although that will make SL forget settings for your avatar(s)--but such settings could conceivably be the problem.

By "latest version" of SL, I'm assuming you mean the client version, and specifically the standard released version (1.19.0.5), but if you happen to mean the Release Candidate (1.19.1.2), it could well be a Graphics preferences setting (with ATI, I'd be particularly suspicious of Vertex Buffer Objects under Hardware Options which have a habit of working correctly for about half of ATI's driver/card combinations at any given time).

All the specs for the puters listed on this thread put more poor puter to shame lol and I don't crash all the time actually hardly ever cept for logging out the sound tends to take a while to detach then it issues a crash.

I do have fiber optic connection though :-). I sympathise because I rember when first starting getting an education on all the things one needs to do client side and though tedious its best to do all there first.

SL has its issues, with the amount online things can get spongy but till client side is totally up to snuff very hard to determine what is causing the crashes.
