and then second life never loads...
ive gone to support, and it says to clear my cache and then uninstall second life
did that, then reinstalled
same stuff keeps happening
they also said that you could clear you cache manually

You can clear the cache automatically each time the SL client starts. Go to the propeties of your SL shortcut and add -purge to the end. It will look something like this:
"C:\Program Files\SecondLife\SecondLife.exe" -purge

Come to think of it I had the same problem after getting Vista. I also added -noprobe so that it does not probe the hardware and it has worked fine since. So it will look like this:
"C:\Program Files\SecondLife\SecondLife.exe" -noprobe -purge

hmmm, to quickly find where the SL program hides the cache in XP I use the search and type in Application Data, and find the folder with my computer's name on it. (hidden folders must be viewable to find it) Does Vista have the same setup?

But isn't there a place to specify where your cache is stored in the Preferences of the SL client?
...checking...

Under Preferences, Click on the network tab in the current SL viewer/client. Look at you Disk Cache Location. I am using Vista atm, and mine is set to:
C:\Users\owner\AppData\Roaming\SecondLife\cache

Default Directory (for XP):
C:\Documents and Settings\{YOURPCLOGIN}\Application Data\Second Life\cache
delete the cache directory - Second Life will recreate it.
