I belong to a 180 member group and I recently discovered that the one and only owner/officer hasn't signed in since July 2006. Can anything be done about this such as promoting a volunteer to owner as it has now been unmanaged for nearly three years?

Only the members with group rights to change roles can do this, or the owner so looks like its a case of making new group and asking all in it if they would join the new group!

I think your stuck with that one. I believe if the owner of the group leaves and designates another member of the group as owner that is all that works. Basically it's a dead group, you could make a new group and send an invite to all the other members explaining why and hope they delete their membership from said group and move over to your new one.

Lindens will not promote any existing members to owner. As said before, once the owner leaves a group and doesn't designate another member as new owner, that group is as good as dead. Only option is to form new group and invite all existing members to that new group.

But ontopic here, yeah it's a dead group. invite all the members to the new group and basically call it a day
