What type of animal?

Grendel's seems to be all the rage.

I definitely recommend starting at Grendel's, as they are very inexpensive and have an enormous range.

There are lots of other great creators though as well - you can search for "animal avatar," "dog avatar," and related terms in world or on XstreetSL and start exploring. Raglan Shire and Loco Pocos are two nice places to go for wonderful small, cartoony animal avatars called "tinies".

If you see someone wearing an animal avatar you like, just ask them where they got it, or right-click and "inspect" the prims they are wearing to look at the creator's profile. Most content creators put a link to their shops in their profile picks.

As to whether animals take on humans as their "masters," I would not be at all surprised to learn that some people role-play this way. I've never met anyone who does, though, and I'm not sure how you'd find other like-minded folks. I'm sure someone else can chime in with some ideas.

You mean furries? You should search "furry" if you're looking for anthro avatars. There are a lot of free ones, too! I got a unicorn one for free when I first joined

I'd second the vote for Grendel's, they have a huge range of 'feral' animal avatars at very reasonable prices. No dogs that I remember, unless you include wolves & hyenas. The Werehouse avs are better, to my mind, but much more expensive.

I've worn an animal av (Werehouse raccoon, in particular) and RP'd with passers-by without speech, just emotes and the actions in the AO. I've had all kinds of reactions from fear to 'awwwwinnidcuuute!!!'. Occasionally I've been mistaken for a scripted critter or part of a sim's fauna. It's nearly always fun; most people react completely differently to animal avs.

I'm not aware of any pet adoption agencies (in the non-D/s sense of pet). I was briefly 'adopted' as a pet while I was in my raccoon form, but that was purely by chance. I can see why it would appeal: it strikes me as a little like child-family RP.

To comment on the interacting with an animal avatar- funny how these things do change our perceptions- at least mine. I have a friend i hardly ever see in human form. To me he is a little fox regardless, to the point that even in IM i tend to talk to him as if he were his fox form :)

I think the Werehouse quadruped AVs tend to have better animations than Grendels, but they are a lot more expensive (or were last time I looked) and there's little to choose in terms of how actual prims look.

As for RPing - I used a set of Dari's slave collar scripts to make a collar so my partner can take my wolf AV for a walk.

Because of SL's dumb search system, searching for "Grendels" (without the apostrophe) will bring back zero results. I've recommended the place to people before, and they've come back telling me they can't find it. You have to tick on 'include Mature' too, even though they keep the place fairly PG.

Another one now I remember... Nimbus Rau's 'Metamorphoses', especially for quad cat avatars.

Here are some animal avatar creator SLurls from my pet/animal blog directory at Second Menagerie (slmenagerie.wordpress.com) that might be good places to start:

Badinpaws Avatars:

(follow arrow from landing point)

D&D Dogs

Werehouse

Wynx's

A few of the locations like might be more furry- or tiny-related but they definitely have quadruped or flying animal avies in stock among the furry/tiny stuff.

Good luck with your search!

Darn tootin' it's silly. Whatever gave you the idea that humans are our masters?

I've rather had fun lately clomping about as a Clydesdale. If a full four-legged pony, horse, zebra or unicorn is your thing, check out either Lone Star Ranch or Hoof-It.

Also, there is usually somewhat of a difference between anthro (somewhat human body with animal features) and full quad (down on all fours). That would also somewhat dictate where to shop.

Buy an animal av, as others have said...that part is easy enough.

The answer to your second question is yes, just depends what you uh, seek. Be clear about it and look in the logical places. There are pets and there are, well, pets. (Gor allows 'gorean animals' on many of its sims for instance, and those often have 'masters' or human allies, as I will put it out of deference to those four-leggeds in the forums here. :) )

Goodness, how did I miss this thread before??? Yes, you should be a dog! Of course! You will need to decide whether you want to be a furry (walks on 2 legs, with human characteristics) or a quad (walks on 4 legs, acts like a dog!)

My dog avatars are from D&D and Tiny, Inc. Happymood (HPMD) has a very handsome beagle avatar. People try to adopt me sometimes when I'm out shopping, but I'm an independent canine. If you want to be adopted, you could seek out places where roleplay families with children hang out. What kid doesn't want a dog?

Also, if you want to be a bit scary, search for ReMzy Andrews. Her werewolf avatars are feral styled and very detailed. they are older, non-sculpted, designs but they look better then most modern ones and the animations are top notch. If you're wanting a more cute scary look, the werewolf cubs are adorable :)

No one's mentioned it yet, so...

Magican Productions has tiny-sized quadruped pugs, dalmations, and Kyts, which are fox like. Other quads too.

Dragon Keep Creations (my line, heh) has tiny quad huskies, as well as cats, foxes, raccoon dogs, and other species. Also full-sized quad horses and kirin.

All the other good ones that I know of have already been mentioned.
