In this post here: https://blogs.secondlife.com/community/technology/blog/2009/05/14/the-greening-of-second-life? From: FJ Linden Finally, we are evaluating and testing a new class of server, which will be using the new Intel Nehalem chipset. My expectation is to begin deploying these servers in conjunction with the commissioning of our East Coast facility in late 2009. These servers will also support our green strategy, as we expect to see a dramatic increase in core processing power, allowing us to host a greater number of regions on a single server. Depending on how many sims they try to jam on each chip maybe class 6 sims will end up performing worse than class 5. Just trying to work it out in my head but I think, statistically speaking, that the more sims you can fit on a single server the more predictable it's performance will be. i.e. the worst and best case scenarios will be worse or better but far more sims will end up with performance close to average.

As soon as I saw that, my first thought was that they would try to pack the number of sims on the new servers to give the same performance, but mess it up resulting in worse sims for everyone. At least it's good to finally know that some new servers are on the way, but it would be helpful to have a lot more details.

Nothing changes. LL continues to cram so much into each box so that they aren't capable of performing the tasks that are expected of them.

Hoping for the bright side:
If these servers are going into a 'from the ground up' set of racks, and have overkill on cheap memory and fast storage on what is realistically a once-off opportunity then maybe things will be more stable for them. The network infrastructure around them will be simpler. It just needs to be 'fatter'.

Hopefully they'll have more than 4GB of RAM per server.

From: Felix Oxide Oh good. Another reason to charge us more. More likely the setup fee for sims will go down. Don't worry, people will whine about it whichever happens.

I'm not very tekkie but it depends on what exactly they mean by 'dramatic increase in core processing power' - will that be a 50% increase or a 200% increase?

So they are going green does this mean they will blame the lag on the lack of wind?

From: Conifer Dada I'm not very tekkie but it depends on what exactly they mean by 'dramatic increase in core processing power' - will that be a 50% increase or a 200% increase? same thing here.. more power efficient servers ... smaller electricity bills.. more sims per server and more more more laughing all the way to the bank... the only green thing about this is our faces.. and our money in their pockets

From: Felix Oxide Oh good. Another reason to charge us more. The cost of new hardware is so insignificant a part of the TCO for a server farm that it shouldn't impact us. Plus, more images consolidated on fewer platforms equals cost relief in the systems management line item. Also, if I were LL I might leverage the new environment to allow me to provide a Super Premium environment for selected regions (of course, with a Super Premium price tag). Hey, now that I'm not just a pretty redhead I can talk like this! (I obviously have nothing against pretty redheads, just for the record)

/me waves bye to good ol' FSB... edit: Ha!! I actually called it right but the date was off by a bit: . Happy happy to see LL going to a QPI bus instead of FSB - makes a ton of sense given how sims like to stay on their own core.. edit edit: drat! Sindy beat me to it..

Well there's not a lot of choice.
Where would you buy a new computer from 2004 or 2007 nowadays, anyway?
Computers have a lifespan, and are outmoded quickly. Not much to be done about it.
We'll see class 6, 7, 8, 9, (wooo, class nine wow that sounds kewl!), 10, 11, 12, 13...

From: Desmond Shang class nine wow that sounds kewl! Hmmm, Class Nine servers running Plan Nine would be cool. The hierarchical storage and network-oriented compute model is seriously nifty.

Would that Plan Nine be from outer space? They will rue the day they implemented this green crap. We will need the heat from those servers once the ice age hits.
