I long ago learned to completely ignore traffic figures when searching and roaming around and, as I suspect many others do, took more notice of the little green dots on the map. Anyone got a suggestion for LL as to how they could say, change the dot colour on the map for an 'inactive' avie (red = NPIOF for instance), or how about some metrics that could be pulled off the map for each region??

Your suggestion would be handy for us Residents, but not necessarily in the best interests of LL.
Remember, their interest lies in having the numbers of in-world avatars being as large as possible. So they're not necessarily going to want to distinguish active from inactive, or people from bots, etc.
(I'm not slamming them--I'm just noting that if the interests of a for-profit business don't coincide exactly with the interests of the customers, then.....)

It could also be argued that a more positive experience for new residents would result in better retention, thus benefiting the business owners with more avatars needing goods and services. So, what simple metrics pulled from the map on a region basis, would be useful ? I realise that, on mainland certainly, the picture could get confused where there are multiple venues in the same region.

There was a discussion in the last month or so about the concept of identifying bots on the mini-map, even if it was on a voluntary basis. The upshot was that LL probably can not identify which accounts are being run by bots, and which are actual live people, and that any voluntary tagging likely would not be used by the bot runners that most people would like to be able to identify the activities of. Nor can they reliably identify alts.
Tagging based on 'Payment info used', 'Payment info on file', or 'No payment info on file' probably wouldn't be that useful. Bots that buy land are Payment Info Used accounts - Premium accounts, even though all they do is leech off the land sales system and try to get bottom-dollar land prices. Bots or even real people who just sit in camping chairs all day may or may not have payment info on file. Alts that are "no payment info on file" may well have acess to lots of L$ from their main account, which feeds them an "allowance" as needed to make purchases. Which would you rather have in your mall? A bot or camper that buys no merchandise, but happens to show up as Payment Info Used, because part of its function is to take L$ from camping chairs? Or a NPOF alt that is buying several thousald L$ of your merchandise today?

Or a 'Payment Info Used' alt that is buying several thousald[sic] L$ of your merchandise today?" I must have misunderstood the OP, because I was under the impression they were just wanting them to be able to be identified on the map... not which one was the preferred BotDot.
