Writing ON a prim? Probably using a texture with text in it is as close as you can get to "writing" on a prim, I think.

Your content creation questions are better served in content creation forums: building tips, at the very least.

Second, you need to make a texture (an image, using a paint/photo editing program) with text, and then upload and apply that image to your prim.

Otherwise, you get a floating text script (plenty free ones around) and stick that in your prim.

I have created text in Powerpoint, saved as a jpg picture, uploaded it to SL, and used it as a texture. Super easy and worked great! The plus side is that PP has some pretty good basic effects and you can download free texts all over the internet to suit your need.

HTH!

Besides applying a text texture to the prim, or hovertext as already mentioned, if you have prims to spare, search for the XYText script in the Scripting Library forums; as I recall you can get a max of 10 characters per prim that way. Or, if you have the text on a webpage and you can devote the parcel media channel to it, you can point parcel media to the URL--although for that to work, it requires that visitors to the parcel turn on parcel media in their viewers.

[EDIT: ignore the XYText thing--looks like the wiki version cited has incorporated all the improvements XYText accumulated along the way, and perhaps others.]
