Missing Inventory, is it hopeless?

Twice in the past week i has lost very expensive items that were no copy. The first time 2 hours before the blog showed a problem with the asset servers, and today 30min before the scheduled database upgrade was supposed to begin.

I have tried clear cache, deleting the apps folder, reinstalling SL, logging on from another comp. Is there anything i am forgetting to try?

I have written to designers when something came up missing for whatever reason and pleaded for their good nature. I've never been let down, they have always said, sure here is another copy.

One more thing - when I've "thought" things were missing in my inventory, I have found them in totally irrelevant folders. Not to say that this is the case for you but just an idea...

If you have a key word that you can use for the items in question, type that word in the search bar and see if you come across the item that way.

I am in the same position, I lost my whole folder of animals. Several Zooby items, AAK deer, birds, dogs, cats wearable pets etc. My inventory is showing over 600 items missing :(
Many of the pets were given to me by my hubby and that just made them more precious to me

Is there anywhere you can back up inventory and save it?

Unfortunatly this was my backup, it was box full of clothes that i didn't wear, decided to wear some and poof it vanished.

I guess i wasn't meant to wear those clothes :(

Unfortunately, no.

I have folders that are now totally empty, folders with a few items remaining and other items missing.

I have searched for keywords, I have cleared my cache, I have deleted the cache folder, restarted, reinstalled, etc, etc, etc. Some of these items have been gone for a couple of months and I find more missing items every day.

If your missing items daily I'd start thinking about changing your password.

Are you waiting awhile for your inventory to replenish, it normally looks like everything is missing when you first login.

Yes, you can. http://www.secondinventory.com/

But, you need full perms on the items to use it.

The only other tip I have is one that Lindens sometimes tell people: after clearing your cache, log in to a low-lag sim. (I go to Cyclops because it's an easy name to remember.) Open your cache and search. Don't do anything while the inventory fills up -- no IMing, changing clothes, etc. If the loading stalls, change your search term. I really hope you get your items back!

I represent my university in an organization that has spent a boatload of money on technological innovations at the six participating institutions. We have a list of reasons to get involved in SL, as well as a list of concerns. LL's inability to fix inventory problems is one of the primary reasons we haven't jumped in and purchased a few islands.

I do know that if you put no copy items into a prim (that you did not create) it will dissapear and as far as I know there is little you can do.

I will try that, thank you.

I did not know that. Not the case here, but good to know for the future.

Yep, got that tip directly from Guy Linden while he was investigating performance issues with my home sim a while back. I did that while he watched and, guess what, it didn't work. But I keep trying it a couple times a week anyway just in case.

Problem is that I tend not to look in every folder I have every single day. I only open a folder when I need what is in it. So, I can't say I am losing stuff every day. It could have been gone for a while and I'm just now noticing it. So, very difficult to file a ticket and say that I lost something today when it may have been gone for weeks.

Oh, and I do change my password from time to time, currently more than 10 characters of mixed upper, lower case and numbers. And I NEVER tell the client to remember my password.

I'd suggest that if your items are "copy", you put a copy of them in a prim and keep it in your house (if you have a house). If it's not in your inventory, it can't vanish... at least, that's my theory. I'm trying that out after having lost a number of items before.

Also I think if there are fewer items in the inventory there is less likelihood of stuff disappearing from there, but don't quote me on that.

Well it wasn't hopeless. A few hours ago the one item that vanished, started talkin to me again, it has a script to tell when my hubby is online/offline. Couldn't find the item and my autoreturn broke (76 items owned by others, autoreturn wouldn't return them) so Chiyo restarted the sim. Voila it got returned to my inventory lost and found folder. I hope this happens to anyone else that lost objects on rez.

Edit - Sorry this is Lea i just forgot to switch.

I have lost items out of my inventory and, in a scenario similar to that described by Lea Vendetta, I have found that items that haven't been accessed for a long time tend to be the ones that seem to fall off the SL database first.

Examples of lost items tend to be parts of projects I was working on and shelved / finished for several months or years. When I go back to them I find that parts are missing. In one case the entire project was lost. Most of the time I can re-assmble these projects from incremental backups I keep.....time consuming.

The entire stock of everything I have for sale in SL vanished from my inventory several months ago never to return. Fortunately I was able to retrieve it all from my vendors.

----> Keep multiple backups of your created work in storage prims dotted around the grid.

----> Do the same with copiable purchases.

----> Rez no-copy items regularly (mebbe once a month) to keep them from vanishing.
