Any of you builders using Second Life for Linux? Did you encounter the Zoom/Alt problem? If so, how did you fix? How can I config Gnome/KDE to not use Alt key? Or how do I config Second Life to not use Alt, but another key for Zoom?

Yep, in KDE anyway. As I recall, in kcontrol ("KDE Control Center";) Desktop / Window Behavior, Window Actions tab, I changed the Modifer key from Alt to Meta. ( or at least that's what I think I did--it was a long time ago. :o ) Of course your mileage (and distro) may vary).

Yes.

Yes, I encountered it. The config question is actually two entirely different questions. In Gnome, it's System > Preferences > Windows > Movement Key. Odds are the default (alt) is not what you want, you want super (if you have a Windows keyboard, your super key will be mislabelled with the Windows logo).

Okay, thanks ...digging back into it. Btw, which linux distro are you using with Second Life? Is the 3d graphic card working great on your end?

Not sure which of us you're asking, but I'll guess that Baloo is using Debian; I'm using Gentoo. The graphics card, an nVidia GeForce 8500 GT (driver version 173.14.09), worked fine right out of the box. On the other hand, I have a better ATI card in a box on the shelf, through no fault of SL: just could never get the ATI OpenGL drivers to run on that card at all, despite earlier having used a wimpier ATI card with no problems.

Btw, there's a Linux-specific technical subforum at /263/1.html that's fairly active, with posts that may be relevant to any problems that crop up.

Thanks for your reply and link. Currently, have the AGP/ATI card on Ununtu, seems all is okay except that alt key I mentioned.

I'm running openSUSE 11.0 and 11.1 on my machines, geforce 8 and geforce 9, and SL runs better than on windows on the same hardware.

btw, what is the "Alt problem"?

Alt/Zooming I mean, especially very very useful for building.

P.S. Opensuse is nice and fancy. Getting that distro ready for my next workstation. Anybody here with Linux Mint? How about Centos 5 Desktop?
