Isn't it time we get joints back?

For those who are old enough, don't you miss joints? I do. I thought it was fun to have a swinging door or a tire swing. It also helped make rides. Then... they were gone :(

But things are different now, the sims are more stable. Shouldn't we get them back?

There's a jira issue on that subject, "Havoc 4: Time to bring back hinges?" http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/SVC-2467 that was filed June 2008. It has 8 votes.

This was slightly encouraging:

The Falcon mentioned there is a new Linden who walked in the door well versed in Havok.

is this the same as the bouncy castle script not working for friends when you put it in an object and you are the only person who can jump up and down on it ?

Bouncy Castles used to rule ages ago, and i tried making bouncy cushions using the script recently but gave up after no one else could bounce up and down on them except me. It totally spoilt the fun.

btw ! I cant believe how Awful SL has been tonight 23rd Dec 2009 and it's nearly xmas day. I gave up trying to log in. Wishing yoo all an awesome xmas and hope SL is in some kind of working order in 2010....

Huggs and no bugs..

I don't know what Bouncy Castles is but it sounds to me like there might be an llGetOwner in the script when there shouldn't be.

Andrew Linden puts joints behind region crossings in priority.

From: someone
[11:49] Andrew Linden: yeah, region crossings need work.
[11:49] Andrew Linden: Definitely higher on the list of things to do than client physics or jointed objects.

Was the land you were putting it out on set as no push? If so, that's the problem.

(I learned that while troubleshooting trampolines some time back)

So "no push" still lets the script push the owner?

I don't expect to see movement on it before hierarchical linking. but that's just my opinion

Sadly, with software, you can't go back 5 years and enable some piece of old code and expect it to still work.
The amount of effort LL will have to put in to enable joints now, is probably comparable to writing this functionality from scratch.

And although getting joints functionality back would be fun, I can imagine new kinds of functionality which would be much more useful or appreciated right now. (Think flexible sculpties, hierarchical linking etc.)

The title of this thread is totally misleading. I came here expecting a far different conversation.

I agree completely. I'm quite a big fan of low dives and rude joints, and I was hoping we would get more of those. Still, I understand the physics issue--if you take a low dive you're likely to bust your head--still, I know it's possible; I have a cliff diving ball on my land...

I don't think anyone was advocating enabling old code.

I remember experimenting briefly with joints when I was very new to SL. And then they took them away...

The building kind, silly!

Seriously, we used to be able to define the point of contact between two prims to be a hinged joint, and could even make part of the hinged joint subject to gravity. It was really cool. I never did quite understand why they eliminated them, other than that they were trying to cut back on potentially lag-inducing, calculation-intensive constructs.

Why not? The Unreal engine still has it? The problem is, LL didnt have a clue how they were writing the code & borked any ability to add or remove features without screwing up the rest of the stuff.
