Seems to me like a lot of people are missing from SL. Came back from a 5 week trip and there are almost no 'discussion events' or 'education events' and the few art and culture events I've been to have had almost nobody there. my neighbors have vacated and land stands unused. Is this an August phenom or are people gone and LL just padding the list? Or in other words WHERE THE HECK IS EVERYBODY??

People and things come and go in SL - what's hot now won't be hot tomorrow. It is unusual when all of your interests move on at the same time, but given the size of SL that much coincidence has to come together every now and then. That said, I'm finding a lot of things going on in SL. But what interests me might not interest you, and to be honest a lot of what I'm finding isn't of interest to me either - but I do find enough of the things that interest me to keep me going. Have you tried search and other methods to find new places with your interests and come up empty there as well?

I have noticed many people are missing, but I hardly come on anymore Just pop on to build and try to get excited about my new land .. its hard when people you know just are gone.

Time for Linden Lab to get a big marketing campaign out there. Like another CSI cameo or something.

From: Lias Leandros Time for Linden Lab to get a big marketing campaign out there. Like another CSI cameo or something. Most definitely - past due. I notice Waves....from checking join dates in profiles every day. It's not scientific data....you'll have to consult Anya for that. But from reading the profiles of people in the store shopping....some join date time periods will come up continually, over and over again, like there was a wave. From reading their clubs and picks - pretty good cross section of people. There is a large portion that came in October of 2008....then in late November and December of 2008, and early January of 2009....then a wave 1st week of February 2009. A large portion with early March join date. Then a wave in June of 2009. My 2006/2007 friends are dropping out like flies - even those who were hard core are at the end of the cycle and totally done. They all came in from the Anshe Chung article wave. That was a huge amount - I think you are really going to notice a dent with all these people disappearing now. Their life cycle is pretty much over.

Well, there are life cycles. No offense to the late 06 and early 07 still partying down....but there is going to be a trickle down effect with that large group that joined.
At the moment I'm watching join dates. I'll do the life cycle research next month.

From: Mickey Vandeverre My 2006/2007 friends are dropping out like flies Yep. And I'd have been gone a long time ago if I didn't like building things, or didn't have some success doing so. Socially SL hasn't been as it was in 2006 since sometime in 2007. Maybe it was just the constant waves of curious new people that made things interesting. LL needs to figure out how to get that going again. From: someone They all came in from the Anshe Chung article wave I came in the customer-database-compromised-article wave

I came in 2007 after reading a very brief article in Time, Newsweek or some such. I think it was just a sidebar article. It made it sound like SL was all about buying and selling virtual land which sounded kind of boring, but I had been dreaming of a virtual world nearly all my life and gave it a try anyway.
To be honest, my cycle seems to have run out of steam a bit too. Part of my problem is I'm just tired from real life. It seems a lot of people are out of work and the rest of us are overworked. I don't feel the energy or need to log in so much. But it's still hard to beat the joy of partying and dancing with acquaintances I've come to know, working on my projects and seeing what others are up to. I can think of no better venue for sharing creativity. That always keeps me coming back.

Well said, Weston. That is pretty much how I feel as well.
With the addition that I am in the mood to start something in SL if it is the RIGHT thing. I'm actively looking for a big project to sink my teeth into, to keep me busy while RL does its thing. This is my decompression time.
I also love the idea of just making a little corner better wherever I go. As much as possible. It sounds Pollyanna but a kind word or a tree planted (sometimes literally), go a long way and it makes me feel good in the doing. I am not saying I am always successful - I have my grumpy/snarky days since I am above all human. ;P

It made it sound like SL was all about buying and selling virtual land which sounded kind of boring, but I had been dreaming of a virtual world nearly all my life and gave it a try anyway. I came in from the launch of Poser 7. I'm a 3D artist and that launch had a party in something called Second Life. So I followed some instructions, logged in, and discovered I had an FPS of about 0.1 on a good moment. So after getting something or other for Poser out of it, I logged out and didn't come back. Then in May I gave it another try, and on a new setup found a much nicer experience. As for getting things going - I'd love to get a bit more activity going around my cafe, but the work of being an event manager is not something I'm keyed up for. That said I do know many places I can go to when I want to be around crowds of people - right now SL is meeting both that need and a bit of a builder's need (put my first skybox on the market just this last week - and now using it to hold my shop. That was a lot of challenging fun to build).
