Megaprims and content creator mis-identification

I've had quite a few incidents recently where someone has contacted me for information regarding some item that they believe I created, like a large tree, or a modular sidewalk and street section, or a large item of some other sort. But it's an item I never heard of, in many cases in a sim I have never been to. What it has turned out to be is that the actual creator of the large item used one or more of the free megaprims that I created earlier this year. And since the megaprim was either not linked to anything else, or was only linked to other megaprims, or was the root prim in the linkset, it was my name, as the megaprim creator, that shows as the item's Creator!

So... A few "words to the wise".

As a content creator:
If you make something using Megaprims made by someone else, be sure to link those megaprims to at least one prim that you made, so your prim is the Root Prim. Then, if someone clicks on the large prims in the linkset to find the Creator, they will still see your name as Creator, and not the name of the person who made the megaprim. For example, if you used three 30M x 5M x 0.01 megaprims to make a 30M tall Poplar tree, add one more prim of your own at the centerpoint where the three meet, and make sure your prim is the root prim. Perhaps this prim could be the trunk of the tree, or if nothing else it could be a 100% transparent cube at the centerpoint where they all meet.

As a consumer:
While for most things, you can click on any prim in an item and in Edit, get the name and profile of the Creator of those prims, people need to realize that this method does NOT work reliably in identifying who made a textured item made of megaprims. Look at the size of the prim. If it is larger than 10M in any dimension, and if that prim is not linked to anything else, or it or another megaprim is the root prim, ignore the "Creator" information for that prim. You may need to seek the current Owner of the prim instead, and ask where they got it.

Remind me please how to make a particular prim the root prim?

If people are doing it wrong they probably do not know how to do that part. :-)

I did make something that had someone else listed as the creator, it was because I used a free poseball for a chair. It was for my own use but it was like, wow, I think I made this. I was there! Lol.

It's probably people who are new to building, who are doing this, with or without realising it happened or how to fix it.

The last prim you select before you link will become the root prim, or if you select some prims and then select a linked object the root of that object will remain root. If the item is already linked, unlink it, then while it's still all selected, de-select the prim you want to become the root and re-select it, then link the object.

I get a few questions per week about products I've never heard of because I, too, created some megaprims. So far everyone has believed me when I've told them I'm not the maker of the object, but I know I'll have to deal an irate non-customer one of these days.

I quite often forget this and find it confusing because while you are in the processing of selecting multiple prims, the object name in the build window stays as the name of the first object selected until you actually link it all or take the mass to inventory. At those times is when the object name will become the same as the last item selected.

One of the many peeves about the crippled way they handle nonstandard prim sizes. :/

Are they ok? Or aren't they? In the Havoc4 discussions, it seemed that they were going to be ok, at least up to 256m.

It drives me bonkers though when building stuff and I need a particular size, that isn't available.

Due to the fuzzy issues of allowed or not and the creator name, I won't sell anything made with megaprims...

I use them all the time though for my own static buildings etc.

*chortles* My alt is the creator for my mega prims in the shop. A while back, the server code allowed us to create mega prims via one of the debug settings. Too bad they fixed it.

But, this is a very good tip for those that have mega prims they didn't create!
