I have a building that is standing empty in grounds of around 6000sqm. I'd like to do something philanthropic with it (ie. give something back to the community rather than make money from it).

My initial thought is to turn it into an art gallery and allow people to exhibit there for free. But if anyone has any other suggestions just let me know.

I don't have any experience running a gallery, so also I'd welcome any tips for making it go smoothly.

Galleries are a lot of fun in SL. I've spent some time bouncing around looking for galleries and I've been amazed at some of the work displayed...SL & RL art. A free gallery sounds like a great idea...perhaps allowing a few artists display each month so that you have turnover and fair play to a number of artists.

As a photographer in SL I've spent some time among the art community and while many folks seem to be making L's with their work....plenty don't and are just doing it for fun. My only advice would be to keep an eye out for 'egos'. Be sure, if you have artists showing work, that you're choosing folks who are not already saturated in the SL market. Photography is a bigee. I don't advertise for what I do....and I don't charge a fee...I rely on tips from folks if they are pleased with my work and that has worked beautifully for me. But many photographers in SL charge insane prices (IMO anyway, I just can't justify it)

You may want to check out flickr and Koinup to get an idea of the variety of artists in SL. A lot of the folks displaying on those sites are only doing it for fun and would probably be delighted at the chance to display in world.

Good luck with your idea...visit some galleries....Small World Gallery is a wonderful example of a beautiful gallery design in SL. ;)
