So what is the best way to get started selling things?

What are the most popular things to sell?

How much land should I start out with?

Can anyone suggest a good location to sell things?

Do you think my first shop should be fancy or should I start out small?

Find out what you enjoy making and what you make well, and stick with it.

Clothing probably, because it's easier than scripting or building (to a point). But "popular" can mean that everyone else is doing it, too. If you can offer something that's different than what others are selling you'll build your business faster.

You don't need land to sell anything. Rent vendor space.

Do a search for vendor rentals, malls, etc. The higher the traffic the more popular the spot is and the more you'll sell -- but the rent will also be higher.

Start small, I think. You'll learn things as you go that will help out later.

Pay special attention to permissions - don't sell something copy/transfer or people will buy one copy and then resell the copies. Either Copy/Mod or Mod/Trans are better. And note that notecards can affect your permissions -- make sure the notecards are set to the same perms as the items you're selling.

You can buy vendor scripts if you want, and some are even free, but it's best to start simple and just box up your items, stick an ad texture on the box and mark it "sell contents". When you only have a few items for sale it's easier that way.

Thanks a lot you have been very helpful.

I've been scoping out some of the vendor locations and the results have been kind of disappointing.

Everywhere I go there just doesn't seem to be a lot of people or the market just isn't right.

I want to sell avatars/statues/fountains/artwork. The problem is the prims are pretty high on any of that merchandise. Say you put something in a box does everything in the box count towards the prim limit? I'm guessing the answer is yes. 200 prims just doesn't seem like enough considering some of the avatars can be 50-70 prims.

I found one place that seems to have traffic of 990 and a 200 prim limit. The price was pretty high but the stores looked nice. Any idea if 990 is enough traffic to get started? I saw 1 or two people looking around so it seems like they don't get that much traffic but looks may be deceiving.

I found one drum n bass club that looked cool. They have 500 traffic but there was NO one around. I think I might rent there once I make some money but I don't think it's the right place to start out.

I found one night club with traffic around 10,000. I don't think I'm ready for that.

So the best one I found was 990 traffic. Again, any idea if that is enough? I guess it kind of all depends on how popular my stuff is.

Oh and again, do the prims in a box count towards the prim limit?

No, when you stick a lot of prims inside a vendor, only the vendor's prims count toward the limit.

So you could put a 100-prim house inside a 1-prim box to sell, and only the 1 prim would count.

WOW! That’s great!

Is it the same on normal land?
