All moderators were notified today that a person had asked the Second Life forum masters to close a thread because it discussed pending legal matters. The thread was closed by someone but I don't know who. Please don't discuss these matters or make accusations. For those who want to discuss the DMCA and SL and how we are potentially affected you can continue here. Thanks.

I agree that it looks like the DMCA is a good tool for potentially attacking the innocent. And LL will, in my opinion, sidestep the bullet legally and let us face it alone. It is a guilty before provent innocent scenario with a dash of potential privacy invasion. If you don't want your enemy to have your personal details then you cant fight them.
I also believe that copying content in SL is trivial and will continue.
I see both these things as huge disincentives to invest any significant effort into SL (except for open source projects.*) And, I believe, it will lead to organised crime in SL.
Am I over reacting?
* I wonder if computers will innevitably lead to open source, free, libre software and content in most places simply because piracy can't ever be stopped.

This may be a bit far of a reach. How exactly will it lead to organized crime?

IF the extreme form of all this happens... Stuff can be copied at will by individuals then organised individuals; and DMCA take downs will be used for harrassment and LL will, in a majority of cases, do it since its legally the best course for them to take.
Since SL members number so many and have open enrollments, its simply a matter of time.
