I have heard the beta grid can give you viruses on your computer, is this true?

What is true is that having your computer connected to the internet gives you viruses.
(Which can be proved by any computer NOT connected to the internet NEVER recieves a virus). |

NEVER use the auto-update feature. More often than not, it fails. When you try to log on to either the main or the beta grid, and get a message stating that you need to update, quit completely, and go to the website to downlaod the update manually from there. It works far better that way.

I think the Aditi beta grid is closed to users currently; it's doing the endless downloading of the same version you have installed, which is also the same version available at the download page thing. This is SL's way of saying the grid is closed to users.
This should be changed to just tell you right off the bat that the beta grid is closed. Also, there should be a beta grid status page just as there is for the main grid. I'm testing the auto-updater again just to be sure I'm not posting based on slightly old information, it is dull waiting, the download is rather slow. Ok, here we go ... Yep, same version. If you are in the preview group or beta group if they have updated the group name (ha ha) you can sometimes just ask there if the beta grid is up. The version number for the beta is currently lower than the version for the main grid, that is probably a sign the beta grid is closed. _____________________

There were computer viruses before there was an Internet. They were typically true viruses, rather than the replicating worms that use viral techniques to hide and re-launch themselves after a reboot that are common today... they did as little damage as possible to the host, and copied themselves around by piggybacking on file uploads to bulletin board systems.
In general, you should never get a virus unless you engage in risky behaviour, or someone you trust has engaged in risky behaviour. Using Internet Explorer or Outlook at all, Safari with the default settings, Firefox with any extensions (unless you practise safe XPI), Windows Media Player or Realplayer in any kind of browser-like mode, and any 'browser enhancement' that's required for free access to a normally paid service... these all count as risky behaviour. |
