Just a thought, but if someone using voice sees me, and I have voice disabled completely (don't speak with it, don't listen to it), then do they see an icon indicating that I can't hear them?
It's just a thought, as the main concern people seem to have is that if lots of people use voice then people who don't will have difficulty following conversations. But if I walk over with a visible "I can't hear you" icon (like a muted speaker or something), then others immediately know that to respond to me using text, or switch to text only so I can participate.
I'm just wondering if this is how it is now, otherwise I'm going to Jira it, as it shouldn't be too hard to transmit my voice enabled/disabled status, and display it. I remember reading somewhere that people who are speaking are indicated, but beyond that I'm interested to know.

People with Voice Enabled will see an icon over the heads of other voice enabled players, and no icon over everyone who does not have voice enabled. People who do not have voice enabled will see nothing over anyone. If someone wants to use Voice, they can search for other people with the dorky symbol over their heads to talk to. Many people, myself included, loudly protested the initial plan to force anyone who did not use Voice to have some symbol on them, branding them as a non-voice user. And LL actually listened and switched it so only the Voice Users had extra junk over them, and visible only to other voice users. As far as I am concerned, that setup is just fine. When I am using SL, and not using Voice, I couldn't give a tinker's damn about who IS using Voice, nor do I want my view polluted with visual indications of the existance of Voice Chat. If I choose to keep Voice turned off, which I assuredly will 100% of the time, then I don't want ANY visual reminders that Voice exists. I will grant that it might be useful to have a "middle ground". A setting that allows someone to listen to what is being said and to see the icons on the voice enabled people, without having to go fully voice-enabled themselves. Perhaps that state should have an icon of some sort for "I can hear, but can't/won't talk". The Voicers will know that the person can hear them, but that they must expect replies to come via text chat only.

(which is the one I use for SL most of the time) and I'd like to suggest to any Lindens lurking - how about limiting voice to group like other parcel options - there's a need for that when you don't want everyone talking, but the people participating in your event who need to announce via voice, or say people who want to do dramas, and the like. Otherwise you're always beholden to the one griefing who can't get the clue that there are times in life where you're not supposed to run your trap

Hmm, on the issue of events, the ability to quickly toggle listening to voice on/off (like with music and movies) would be handy when available on a plot of land, rather than having to go into preferences all the time, that way if I have voice disabled I could still go to a concert or whatever and switch it on to listen (but only if it's restricted as you say )

So you can still listen, but not speak in voice chat Use Push to talk and keep the mic button off

You'll spend a lot of time explaining to people why you won't speak back to them. I like the idea of setting the ability to use Voice as a group role. It's a parcel control, after all. But it would have to be set in such a way that those who wished could still operate in "listen-only mode", which does not exist at this time. "Talk" and "Listen" as seperate permissions. Otherwise, if for example a club allowed a stand-up comedy duo to be the only ones in the club able to use Voice, then the audiance would be unable to hear them.

Brenda, you appear to have a very narrow view of people who won't be using voice. Let me add to the list:
Deaf/dumb residents Those hard of hearing Those who wearing a headset for any length of time get head and/or ear ache (me). Those who don't have English as their first language. Those who have their sound turned off in SL so they can watch a film or listen to music (also me).
I am sure there are other examples but that will do for a start.

Grrr. I don't have a headset connected to my usual computer for SL, its on the one I use for graphics and video editing. I have the speakers hooked up, and right now I don't feel much like buying a new headset for something I don't think I'm going to use very often. Regarding group-only public chat - I agree totally, it needs to be set up so everyone can listen, but only people in the group can speak. We're on the same exact track there For performances, its necessary to have it so people who are in the performance can voice, and people can listen to them in the audience. I can see a huge use for this feature. And for business - well its necessary, if you are going to follow Robert's Rules of Order - where certain people can have the floor - but the general audience aren't allowed to speak but are allowed to overhear.
