Finally got 'hanging' voice working - firewall workaround

Today I got voice working for the first time.

Until now, my PC seemed to hang as soon as I enabled voice. Even with firewall disabled. When checking the processes Voice and VoiceAgent came up, and died some time later.

Today I tried with the firewall, and got it working. This is the reproducable procedure using XP's firewall.

1) Enable the firewall. Make sure Voice and VoiceAgent are not in the list of programs which are allowed access to the internet

2) Start SL. Enable voice, and the firewall will ask permission for Voice to access the internet. Allow this. Now SL hangs. Restart.

3) Now if you start the voice, the firewall will ask permission to allow VoiceAgent to access the internet. Allow this, and the viewer will work with voice.

Next time you use the viewer. First remove VoiceAgent from the programs which are allowed access. While starting the viewer, XP firewall will ask access for VoiceAgent. Just as before.

So why does this work ? Voice didnt work if the firewall was disabled, and doesnt work when Voice and VoiceAgent have immediate access. It does work when VoiceAgent gets access later.

Lindens? Any ideas ?

Since I have bumped this post up, (in one last attempt for suggestions) might as well ask......

What headsets do you recommend for SL Voice ?

Any good headset will work fine with SL. If you don't feel like using PTT you should probably get a USB one with noise canceling as that will have less background noise.

Personally, I use this one: http://www.plantronics.com/north_america/en_US/products/cat640035/cat1430032/prod5500009

I liked this one better, and it had better quality, but it got lost: http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/webcam_communications/internet_headsets_phones/devices/230&cl=us,en

I doubt there'll be anyone here that can help you. You can try looking for Rockin Randall on the beta grid. He works for Vivox, that's handling voice in SL.

Thanks.
Rockin Randall never replied.

Could a Video card have anything to do with not being able to get Voice to work ???

Any help appreciated, thanks
