You have to click in world before the arrow keys work or can fly with pg up.

This one really really bothers me.

I like to use the camera controls while typing. Its like a form of fidgeting while I think.

You can use the Num Pad to walk around, then type at the same time and edit at the same time using arrows . Use Ctrl+Enter to switch between chat and movement. Use the Num lock to switch between the two modes numbers or movement. There is an option to do with the num pad in prefences but have not fooled with it.

ah num pad cramps my style :-)

I always disable camera constraints and use ctrl alt for camera when building or just sight seeing. I go see someones house here in SL and they ask me to come in and see it. Heehee, I tell them that I have already seen every room as soon as I stepped on property.

Yep I do that too :p
I didn't like that i couldn't fly with the numpad (home did nothing).

Hold down the PgUp on numpad to start flying.

Numpad hack NOT ACCEPTABLE

1. As Strife says, there's a lot more in-world movement and command options than just up, down, left, right, and so on... I am always clicking on things, moving the camera, moving myself, dragging my avatar to change my facing, interleaved with typing. If I can't do that then chatting becomes impossible.

It's worse in vehicles, it's hard enough to chat while flying a realistic plane as it is!

2. LAPTOPS DO NOT HAVE NUMBER PADS.

At this point I have to call the Focus Beta "this is not acceptable, it's bad enough to make me not want to use SL at all".

Also, what is the point of leaving the chat bar displayed at all when you can't interact with it? If you can't type, the chat bar should hide, not sit there chewing up space to display "hit control enter".

My laptop does in fact have a number pad... Even so, I agree with Argent that the given workaround is unacceptible.

I honestly think that there must needs be a great many changes before this garbage goes live. I simply cannot imagine enjoying my SL much otherwise.

Mine has a number pad. Only I have to hold down a key between ctrl and the windows key on the left side of the keyboard to use the "numberpad" on the right (7,8,9,0,u,i,o,p,j,k,l,;,m,., and /), though I do lack the numberpad enter key.

How about having alt-click or ctrl-alt-click not take focus away from the chat bar?

The whole beta version stinks. get all your friends to try it and send in a bug report. Above all else the cursor should remain in the chat window unless you specifically put it into an edit window in appearance or build or if you want to type in im.

Why do they insist on messing with something that everyone has become conditioned to. Imagine the chaos if a car manufacture3r suddenly decided to swap the position of the foot pedals so brake and accelorator were reveresed. It may only be a small chanmge but would be lethal.

LEAVE THE UI ALONE and use the time to make useful changes like making object possible to be hollowed in more than one plane
Or even making the anchor poin on flex prims otpional

PLEASE DONT IMPLEMENT THESE NEW CHANGES THEY ARE NOT WANTED AND DONT IMPROVE ANYTHING

The changes as is will not be implemented. They and the Aditi bugs will be corrected before the next main grid update. More people finding bugs is why it is called a Beta Test. QA has a very good record of fixing the problems that are bug reported in Beta versions. Unfortunately there are sometimes scaling problems between the Aditi/Siva grids and main grid. This coupled with a lack of people bug reporting in those grids means there are bugs that were never caught. This is why for somethings a main grid beta client is a good solution. We have more people that might be willing to try beta and report the bugs.

Why limit it to alt-click or control-alt-click? Why should clicking in world at all ever take focus away from the chat bar? Clicking and dragging your avatar is a normal way of adjusting focus, right-clicking on an object so you point to it with your left arm is a normal part of conversation. The chat bar is part of the world, and many in-world actions are part of chat.

The problem is that it's quite possible that they will make some slight changes to the Focus Beta and release it as a new required viewer. They do not have an unblemished record of fixing (or even recognising) bugs in beta. There have been a number of cases where LL has ignored or badly misunderstood comments and feedback during beta tests: the new snapshot interface fiasco, for one example; breaking resident splitting of parcels on islands, for another. The changes they made to PERMISSION_TRIGGER_ANIMATION still need work.

We need to make sure that there's no confusion about what the problem with the Focus Beta is... and it's not just that laptops don't have keypads, it's that chat is part of the flow of in-world actions, and in-world actions are part of the flow of conversation, and any user interface changes that make a stronger distinction between chat and actions need to have some serious justification. The reaction to the MUCH smaller changes to the focus when they introduced the XML UI should have kept them from even bringing this one to beta.

The *visual* changes in the focus beta seem good, and I would have liked to play around with it and give them some good mostly-positive feedback on that, but the focus changes make it so unusable that I can't stand to even try.

My sentiments exactly Argent.

In addition to the Focus problems there is also the fact that the IM window opens up at a huge size even when you set it to the size you want. Next time you try to IM someone or receive a new IM @bang@ you haver 1/4 of your screen filled with the IM window:(

Do us all a favour and spend some time on improving the limited building tools instead of fixing something that aint broke!
