I would love to help in beta testing, but the beta grid refuses to recognise me as a valid account. Is there anything I can do to get this solved?

You have to wait until the next grid snapshot is taken. The latest was taken back in April, and since you joined more recently, you're not in the database for the test grid. Be patient!
From http://secondlife.com/community/preview.php (just above the download links) The beta test grid's database snapshot is from April 13th, 2007. If your account is newer than that date, or your password has changed since that date, you will be unable to access the beta test grid. |

Convince the appropriate parties at LL to update the snapshot.
Hey LL how bout updating the beta grid user database???!!!!! There's new folk wanting to try it out, ya know??? If you don't, we'll start an open letter campaign and talk to our buddies at reuters and cnn... Please please please! There maybe that will do it. _____________________

You might try sending email to the Linden staff asking to get the beta grid profile updated, asuming they haven't done it before I get this typed.
I don't know who to send it to, one might try "philip@lindenlab.com; cory@lindenlab.com; robin@lindenlab.com; heretic@lindenlab.com; torley@lindenlab.com; support@lindenlab.com" and whoever else you think might take action. Plus drop the Linden village place and ask any Linden staff you see, and check to see if there's any places for dropping notecards at. Also, file an issue in Jira in the miscellaneous category. If you have a blog, file a post with the request to update the SL Beta grid snapshot. Send email to your local elected official, ask them to contact Linden Lab about updating the beta grid snapshot. Well maybe not the last one. _____________________

Well, I can't get in either, and I've on SL for several months. It keeps telling me that either my account name or password are incorrect... they're NOT!!! I verified MULTIPLE times.

If you've changed your password since April you probably won't be able to get in. They're updating the snapshot on Monday morning though so try then.

I'm having problem getting on Beta but it's slightly different. When I downloaded the previous update and installed it, when I went to login it stalled and came up with the same 'you must download....' message that I'd just complied with.
Today I downloaded the 1.17, as instructed. I logged in but only appeared as a grey 'Ruth'. So I logged out and when I tried again it just said 'You must download.....' again so I'm going round in circles!!!!! |

It doesn't look as if they have taken any new snapshot. The test grid download page says:
"The beta test grid's database snapshot is from . If your account is newer than that date, or your password has changed since that date, you will be unable to access the beta test grid." So I guess that means the database is broken, since there's no date at all there. At least I can still log in using my 1.16 viewer and the --aditi option! (Note the prominent lack of a Linux version of 1.17) |

(Note the prominent lack of a Linux version of 1.17) It's because the voice code is not being done by LL, so the other company (???) needs to code the linux voice before LL can release a new beta for linux. |

The other company would be Vivox: http://www.vivox.com/index.php It's up to them to bring voice to linux, all LL does is program the interface between SL and Vivox's program. _____________________

Thanks, I knew it began with a V, but I'd have put Voice-ox or something.

Since LL is hiring Vivox to bring voice to SL, it's LL's responsability to make sure Vivox does their job. What bothers me is it seems as if LL is willing to wait indefinitely for Vivox, rather than telling them to get that Linux "blob" to them pronto or forfeit much $$$. I thought LL was committed to supporting Linux; it's one of the reasons I do business with them. If LL releases voice to the main grid without Linux support, I will think a lot less of them. |

When I talked to Joe Linden about voice on Linux a few months back he had said that it was part of their contract with Vivox that they had to offer voice for Linux. Don't know how much pressure LL is putting on Vivox to get that done though. _____________________

Thank you, Kevin. It's good to know that much at least. I hope they are putting the screws to Vivox to get it done - lack of voice support has already caused the Linux viewer to fall behind on the updates.

Did they take one before today? Would love to do some testing but I can't get in to the beta grid.
