Do you have to create a new Account to join the Beta Grid, or do you keep your existing account and password. Can you have the two programmes on your pc, not running at the same time obviously.
Or do you only have to join one.

Depending also on how new your account is, can also determine whether or not you can access it.

Yeah, the beta grid is a restored snapshot of (a section of) the main grid from a month or two previously. If you only joined SL this month, I suspect it's unlikely to recognise your account at all.

I've been on sl for 8 months. Never really explored the Beta Grid, and was just wondering how it operates from the Main grid, and actually what it is like.

The beta grid is a much smaller version of the Main Grid. It's separate from the MG but uses a "snapshot" of the Main Grid for it's database. That's why your account needs to be active on the date of the snapshot. You won't be in the system otherwise.
The BG is a dozen or so regions and LL used them to test out new features and new updates in a "mini-SL" environment before they put it on the MG. Hopefully any bugs will be found and they enjoy feedback on any potential problems people are having on the BG.
It's also nice in that transactions on the BG don't count toward your in world L$ balance and they give you some extra cash to play with. You can't take it with you but you can spend it on stuff in the BG (no, you can't the items with you either). You can also test out textures, sounds, and new sculpted prims there first rather than on the MG where if it's not right you just blew L$10.

If you add "-multiple" to the target fields of the shortcuts you use to start the programs you can be in the beta grid and the main grid at the same time.

Bear in mind that if you change your password after the snapshot has been taken you'll need to use your old password.
