Is the beta grid just the spare grid now and no testing???

The last beta release was on October the 3rd. Since that release the only work done in Aditi was a pile on a few days ago. But absolutely nothing since then. Where is all of the testing happening for the assets changes? Where is all of the testing happening for this rather ominous blog post from this morning:

"I’d like to thank everyone for their extreme patience and support today. There are several of changes going into the next release on Wednesday which should help slow down, if not eliminate, these types of grid attacks."

It isn't happening in Aditi!!!!! We worked hard in this beta finding bugs just like we did in the last one. But now once again you are going to add a bunch of stuff into it at the end that has not been tested in the preview grid.

I am a supporter of preview or I wouldn't be there looking for bugs but WE CAN NOT HELP if you do not give us the changes to test. It should be clear by now that untested code and the main grid do not mix.

Milo why have we been cut out of the loop now? Why no updates to preview and it has been running continously since October 3? Is everyone trying to say that there have been no changes made that need our input???

The preview grid was not designed to be the place to placate people because they can not log in to the main grid. Where is LL testing now? Siva or another test grid????

errrrrrrr Okay, I will be the first to admit that this was a pretty negative way to start the morning. Mainly because I am bitching without offering solutions. But now that I have had my caffiene:-)

It should be clear after the pile on test call that went out the other day that we all do really want to help. People dropped what they were doing and in some cases went through the trouble of downloading Beta to come in and help. We were put through our paces and there was no grumbling or bitching. Actually it was fun!!!!! heehee.

So to me what seems logical is that this morning could have gone differently. Greifing attacks continuing........... scripts stay disabled......... An emergency patch is cobbled together and put on the beta grid and a call goes out; "Please help. need to test a patch in Beta." People go to Beta and after logging on are sent a message containing a list of things that they should test for or try. A linden releases the greifer attack in beta and the patch either catchs and stops it or it doesn't. In case it doesn't then send out message "Sorry, it didn't work. TY". If it does work then send out the message: "Okay great it works but this patch might possibly have an effect on this or that, etc. Please check this and while you are at it please check anything else you can"

So you would end up with the Lindens that had been working on the patch along with 20 or 30 more people now. More eyes and ears are better. I will be the first to admit that it still will not catch 100% but it is MUCH better then not doing it.

Final note: What would have been the harm in doing it? If this would have been done then the main grid would have been online this whole time with just the inconvenience of no scripting. Instead you had to shutdown the main grid now and are having to clean up the problems that you created instead of just the goo. Griefer won, LL lost.

Hi,

Just to note that the code that was deployed over the weekend was the improved greygoo code that has been running on beta for a few weeks now, it was backported and deployed to the maingrid, also the reason for the lack of updates is we have been trying to get to the issue of baking avatars, which we have been testing on another grid and finally merged that in with the main update and a new beta version is now available.

So the improved gray goo code is the code that is breaking content now?

Robin Linden suggests that the latest version of the beta grid has a change from the recently deployed code that should be tried out by those with gray goo error messages.

From: Robin Harper
This weekend we took some aggressive measures to mitigate the ‘grey goo’ attacks, including one which is resulting in this error message because it’s misidentifying your content as grey goo. Your content may be fine, but you’ll be seeing this message for the next 36 hours until we close for the Wednesday update. There are some changes in the update which will fix your object so you no longer receive the error message.

In the meantime, you can take your content to the beta test grid tomorrow to verify that your content will be ok after the update.

Correct that updated code is now deployed for further testing, and deployment tomorrow.
