We had a regrettable incident today during our move to the new colocation facility. We took a step during the process to bring the grid fully back online, which involved a small (we thought) risk. The risk seemed worth taking, since it meant we could get back online faster. However, it meant a period of time where the grid and data were less protected from failure than usual.
Unfortunately, the database server crashed during that time, and then failed on restart. The result is we will have to bring the grid back online with the most recent back-up, which was at 5AM PDT. Those of you who were logged on during the period of time we were live will be getting a separate email about your content and any losses you might have.
At this point we're still testing the grid to make sure we can bring it up safely. As soon as we have an estimated time for reopening Second Life we'll let you know.
The good news is that once the grid is fully restored, and safely housed in its new facility, we expect to see far fewer failures and outages. The new facility has much better power sources, redundancy and thermal controls, and will be able to comfortably accommodate the grid, both today and as it continues to grow.
We're really, *really* sorry this happened, and we'll get you back up and running as fast as is humanly possible.
