Well, that looks very familiar! I'm not up much on rights protection but wouldn't LL have some sort of ownership of their tools and set up?

Yeah, really! Talk about deja vu.

Suezanne, you find the most amazing stuff!

I'm one of the people who thinks that in the long run, SL's edge will be its anarchy, permitting almost all types of user created content, and open sourcing at every opportunity. It's the only way to create a scalable world with any sense of realism.

But this is interesting... just how much user content could be allowed in Hipihi, and whether any restrictions could be circumvented enough to give the users a sense of co-creation.

I agree Brenda. I think its the anarchy that allows for the creativity. I am not hopefull that the powers that be in China will allow the kind of freedom that breeds innovation.

I'm quite pleased to see that admittedly limited skill in building with prims can be put to use in another virtual world.

I'd like to see Linden Lab work towards making a complete portable prim format definition to faciliate the transfer of object designs from world to world, and hopefully to make it possible for builders to sell the the objects they design in one world on the rest of the metaverse.

Linden Lab and Hipihi both say they are working toward a 3D internet. Common file formats are part of what make the internet and the world wide web work. I encourage them and other virtual world companies to work together to faciliate the transfer and exchange of virtual goods, avatars, and funds from one virtual world to another in a way that is effortless on the part of the end user.

I wouldn't be surprised if Hiphi just got the open source client and wrapped their own graphics around it. Maybe changed a few things here and there to make it just different enough.

I'm actualy more hopeful to find powers in China that will allow the kind of freedom that breeds innovation.

What has been proven specialy over last few years is that "the powers that are in Washington DC" are definitely trying to reach new levels of totalitarian public control.

Notice that at the same time the freedoms are beeing "billed away" and constitution ignored, they keep talking about how much theres a lack of democracy and freedoms in China/Russia. At first it's prety strange to think about why our government in the west is talking so much about lacks of those qualities in the east, but when you actualy look at all the new laws beeing introduced and the new bills beeing signed it becomes quiet selfexplinary, they simply want you to focus on the lack in other countries instead of focusing on the freedoms beeing taken away at home, so consequently your judgement becomes corrupted because you endup comparing mainstream media propaganda about "the east" (something they hardly are trying to label as almost worse than under communism) vs your own country and end up thinking "oh i'm so glad my country is so free" without noticing that every month you're less free.

Actualy we might not find much appriciation for freedoms in China neither, but it's worth a try since the current country (occupying) this metaverse has proven to be a totalitarian regime. Ithink we'll endup concluding that virtual worlds needs to become what internet has, each website operates under it's own countries laws but belongs to a big networked world wich we call "internet", and ithink that is the only solution for virtual worlds. Because the problem with the current solution is that you as the user (either you are content provider or consumer) have to follow 2 sets of laws, your own and the country's in wich the virtual world is based, and that can become a big problem. So my conclusion is, either virtual worlds has to be delcared as a own country with its own laws, and form its own usercreated government or it has to be simply globalized like internet is. Either way the current solution stinks.

I believe that Linden Lab and Hipihi are on good terms, and working together to create the metaverse.

At least I certainly hope so. If not, I will have to have some strong words with Philip and Xu.

:)

Hamlet Linden, also known by his real name Wagner James Au, was in the Hipihi offices recently. Maybe Hamlet has turned traitor and is smuggling secrets out.

That last sentence was a ludicrous joke, in case the the humor impaired didn't pick up on it.

This thread is not about the merits of American statism versus Chinese statism. It's about the Hipihi virtual world's build editor.

Hamlet and Xu

Hamlet writing down the specifications for the Hipihi build editor.

Note: the text for the above link is a joke, not the truth. You can't handle the truth.

Since LL has a vision for SL to be open and other providers run sims, it would only make sense for them to embrace Hipihi and them bring them into the larger fold - that LL is positioning themself to run.
