New virtual world for reality TV
17 April 2007 at 12h29

Cannes - Reality TV giant Endemol, creator of the global hit Big Brother, has announced it was teaming up with interactive gaming leader Electronic Arts to launch a virtual world for television addicts.

Virtual Me was announced at the opening of the five-day MIPTV/MILIA trade show, one of the world's largest broadcasting and audiovisual trade events.

The concept was "an extraordinary leap forward in online digital entertainment," Peter Bazalgette, chief creative officer of the Endemol, told reporters.

"This will marry the interactivity of video with the mass market appeal of TV entertainment," he added.

The project, to be launched this summer, would allow TV and gaming fans to create the most sophisticated cyberclones, or avatars, yet in existence, said Bazalgette.

Here's a shot apparently showing the avatar editor with 4 avatars:

Interesting.

Level and ease of customizability are still the biggest factor in any of these games. After three years of SL, it'll take more than pretty graphics to sway me, it'll mean having the tools we have now to make anything we can do in SL..... and more.

I'd have to agree with Psyra. If I can't build, I'd be oh-so bored. :D

If Microsoft ever gets their claws in this and gives them access to endless their bottomless cash pit, it may turn into a more dynamic application.

Looks interesting though.

I don't know...Microsoft? Their games division isn't all that big and they were losing money hand over fist with the XBox.

Although, with their money, this company, or any other company they decide to buy out for a virtual world would have the potential to make something "better" than SL - with all it's capabilities but without the downfalls we are inherently seeing with SL...lag, permission problems, asset problems, scalability.

I am hoping the next virtual world we get is better than SL...haven't seen much of any though. The one's I've seen tend to have pre-created avatars, skins, looks, even clothing...yes, they can be mixed and matched, but nothing you can download or make yourself.

For now...I think I'll live in SL a while longer...hehehe.

I don't understand why a virtual world needs to be evaluated on the basis of whether it's an SL replacement or not. Why not evaluate them on whether they are cool examples of the sort of thing they are instead of evaluating them on how good an example they are of something they aren't?

I find it interesting to see the numbers of virtual world systems and user communities expand. Hopefully the different producers will learn from the efforts of others in the field.

This one does seem like it might not do much for you if you don't watch the TV show it's connected with. My TV is in the living room and my computers are in my bedroom. I don't see the TV set very often.

Tell you what I want to see. There's systems now that use a video camera to look at your face and they can evaluate what emotion you are showing. I'd like to see that kind of expression input applied to an avatar. There's other kinds of facial position sensors that produce more accurate and defined results, but they are expensive. There's also video input systems for gestures and hand movement, systems that work with normal consumer video cameras. I'd like to see that applied to multi-user virtual world.

Of course a Wii controller running an avatar in an SL style world, perhaps SL itself, would be neat.

Like this?

Made in a "plug and play" form, as Linden Lab supported hardware.

So I guess not exactly like that.

Is that thing using the new joystick flying features?

I encourage everybody who thinks LL is bad at bug fixing and CS to try EA's thing.
