From: someone suezanne 03/27/2007 11:55 PM Will end users of the programs produced with Visual3D be able to create and edit content inworld in a manner vaguely similar to object creation in the Second Life virtual world?
najak 03/30/2007 1:33 AM suezanne, sorry for the delayed response. We have a few individuals who have recent experience with 2nd Life development. I have asked them to post a response to your query.
RightRiot 03/30/2007 3:34 AM Suezanne, Secondlife allows construction of objects via the assembly of primitives (primitive shapes such as rectangle, sphere, etc.). Its in-game interface is rather simple, only allowing users to extrude and scale the primitives.
For the first release, we won't support construction from primitives, games will be constructed from art created in Digital Content Creation tools such as 3DS Max. However, in the future, we do intend on distributing tools for the creation of primitives, and like most tools in the Visual3D toolset, they will be able to be distributed to the end user.
najak 03/30/2007 8:24 AM Visual3D.NET does support in-game editing in two modes, while game is paused or unpaused - it's your choice. Currently the hot key for Design Mode is F1, which allows you to pause the game and add more objects or manipulate the ones already in the scene, and then hit F1 again to resume game play. The above is from the visual3d.net forums. http://visual3d.net

Interesting... but I find it surprising that there are so many packages being released along these lines. All these people are really making is something that simplifies the task of creating a 3d scene. Two other very similar products I can think of off hand are VastPark and The Open Source Metaverse Project. In my opinion these things will only ever be of any real use to people who are already strong developers, and are just looking for an easier way to do the same old tasks. There's still a whole lot of coding needed in the background to make something that's really usable (unless all you want is a 3d scene with some basic mouse-click actions). For me, the strong point of SL is the fact that the multiuser ability is already there and that others can see what you're building as you build it. The closest I've seen yet (dare I say it) is There which was just short of actually getting there because it still needs an offline builder. Active Worlds I guess was close too, but it still had this idea of building things from a palette of pre-built objects which I find very frustrating to work with because you seem to end up spending more time looking for the right object than building your end goal. I can understand why people want an offline builder, and I'm sure if there was one I'd probably use it myself (sometimes), but I believe SL's strong point is the fact that it gives us this space to collaborate in with other people, and I've yet to see anyone else come close to that.... yet.

I'm not sure that VastPark or OSMP are the same sort of thing as Visual3D. I'm am sure that Visual3D is not at all the same sort of thing as SL. But it's concerned with multi-user online 3D and it might be something a bit new and good in it's category. At any rate, the beta is scheduled to be released April 30th, so if anyone's interested, it's time to register at http://www.visual3d.net/Home/tabid/36/ctl/Register/Default.aspx .

Looks very interesting for a number of reasons, so I registered for the closed beta and I thank you for the information.

This 3D world building system or whatever you want to call it is available now. It's beta and it's free. People that can program in Visual C# and other such languages might want to give it a try.
I got it installed and got as far as moving a premade spaceship around a bit. It's a bit out of my league.
Anyone interested should make sure they have the XNA Redistributable package installed before trying to use Visual3D.
