Upcoming virtual world Novoking is said to be going beta in September and opening in 6 months.

Website is at http://www.novoking.com, in Chinese.

Too late to do much site translation.

I just googled that and yeah your right, Sept starts the Beta and 6 months goes public.

I wonder if this will allow for the same platform as SL with content being generated by the users.

Some impressive snapshots as well but its all in Chinese on their main site, so that leaves me to also to wonder whether it will be in English in 6 months.

While looking for more info about this one I also came across mention of another Chinese virtual world. Novoking aint the only one knocking off SL. The website for this place called Hipihi http://www.hipihi.com/ is also rather similar to the SL website. And if that aint bad enough check out the screenshot of the client interface in this article. Looks exactly like the SL client except it's in chinese and the map is a different shape. http://www.mobinode.com/?p=155

But back to Novoking... this article has some hints about the ability to create custom content...

Update: Apparently there will be user-created content with support for programs like Photoshop, 3DMax, and Maya. Users can that work with script to add animation and interactivity. Novoking will simply provide a fully built world to begin with, allowing users to go to the existing night club wearing a shirt that they designed.

I'm looking at HiPiHi too - VERY SL-like from the vids/photos.

I really wonder how SL will look compared to a truely repressive government like China operating a metaverse. Will there be "thought/morality" police inworld? Could I get banned for praising Tiennmen Square (sp) or the Tibetan Dhali Lhama? Will they allow furries or even Gays? Can I learn Mandarin? Who knows, but it's REALLY GOOD TO SEE POTENTIAL SL COMPETITORS. This can only give a kick in the ass reality check to LL.

You can make custom clothing and skins in a similar fashion to how you can make it in SL so I suppose one could make a furry of sorts. I may have seen a furry, I've seen so many furries in SL I might not even notice.

There are no attachments for avatars at this point, so there aren't any fancy prim furries like Luskwood Estates has.

The latest version of Hipihi hair moves. Even when it shouldn't. It's fun seeing the changes. The clouds are looking pretty nice now too.

Kermit, read my blog. What the heck do you think I write that junk for?

Also there is a forum for English speakers in the Hipihi forums, it's the forum labeled Overseas Zones. Someone needs to remind them that people in Germany and Russia and Italy and so on are not overseas from them.

Also there is a technique for getting windows to provide the non-English facilities to programs that some folks report is easier than the method described in the Hipihi page at my blog. I can't remember what I need to remember to find this. This is a piece of software that comes from microsoft and works on a by-program basis, if I recall correctly, so you install this language adaptor and tell it Hipihi needs chinese, basically; it's said to be more straightforward than the control panel region and language settings process.

I'm too tired to post any more.

I got into the Novoking virtual world. You could read about my first visit and the picture taking process at my blog at http://suezannecbaskerville.wordpress.com if you want.

Novoking is a very nice looking world.

I sure wish I could figure out how to make the little box in the lower left corner go away. :)

I just looked at Novoking. The joining page would only come up in Chinese so I could only look round the website.

It does look like a copy of Second Life, even down to the 'Your kingdom, your dream' slogan, which not million miles away from the 'your world, your imagination' we all have instilled into us!

But Novoking looks like a serious competitor in terms of the virtual reality it offers, even if it does turn out to be more restrictive in what residents are allowed to do.

The graphics are pretty much on par with SL but LL should look very closely at the cast shadows and move them up the priority list for our grid alongside Windlight.

If I can get in, I'll be interested to see how good animation is but I guess I'll need to know the Chinese for 'lag' and 'woot' first!

I have also had a quick look at the HiPiHi website - that one looks behind SL in its graphics. But they seem to be staking a claim for the high ground in the rush to create this coming 3D internet on a common platform.

Now, in SL I am always sweetness and light, but I'm tempted to become a griefer in Novoking or HiPiHi........hey, what's it worth, LL? A free island for meeee???(LOL - only joking!)

Novoking is in limited beta mode currently.

Google language tools does a serviceable job of translating many pages in many languages well enough to use them.

The registration page in Chinese is at www.novoking.com/DemoUserInfoReg.asp .

Pop that url into Google language tools web page translator and you get this as a result:

Windows Live Search has something that is getting close to being the splitscreen synchronized translating browser I've been wanting - close but not it's not there yet.

The Google page translatior works fine till you want to do something involving logging in - I can read the Novoking forum pages in translated form alright, but can't login and post using the translated version. I have two monitors connected to two computers right next to each other, so when I really want to read and post in a foreign language web site I can usually get by, but often the logged in version of a page is slightly different than the not logged in version, or worse yet you just cant' get to a page when you aren't logged in.

I'm still wanting my synchonized, split horizontally, synchronized tranlating browser that makes a copy of the logged in version that you can't read, uploads it to the internet if needs be get it translated by Google or a similar web based service, or else has the translation program running locally on your hard drive and just does the translation on your local copy of the file.

Google page translator is at www.google.com/language_tools

Google cross language search - which is pretty cool - is at translate.google.com/translate_s

Say you want to search for stuff about baseballs, in Korean - you put in baseballs, tell it your language, tell it Korean, and it translates baseballs into Korean, search for pages with the Korean word for baseballs, and then displays the results - in both your language and Korean.

It's pretty neat.

The Novoking forums have an English page now, and there is some useful information in the Novoking wiki I started at novoking.wiki.zoho.com .

Like I said, they are in limited beta now.

==============================

I've found the Novoking sandbox, and created a few prims with the simple inworld building editor.

I've sized, positioned, textured, colored, linked, unlinked, and deleted a few objects in the Novoking world.

I bought a backpack, but I can't wear it because it is a male's backpack. If that aint silly I don't know what is.
