Introduction

3Di Viewer "Rei" is open source BSD-licensed viewer software for 3D virtual worlds and the 3D Internet. 3Di Viewer "Rei" allows you to view and interact with multi-user 3D virtual worlds using a web browser.

3Di Viewer "Rei" is designed for use with OpenSim virtual world servers. Currently the best-supported servers are 3Di OpenSim Enterprise servers. 3Di Viewer "Rei" also works with upstream OpenSim code, albeit in a limited fashion currently. Future versions will improve compatibility with upstream.

A list of features supported by 3Di Viewer "Rei" is available.

I decided to try compiling the 3di Rei browser based opensim viewer.

I downloaded and installed Visual C# 2008. I already had VC#2005, but the instructions appeared to indicate that you need 2008. I'm not sure that I really needed to get the newer version, having since discovered files that seem to allow for use with either vc#2005 or 2008.

I downloaded and installed Git from Google Code as per the instructions at the Rei site. The Rei site does not tell you how to answer the questions asked by the Git installer. I asked for help at several places on the web, including the Rei Google Group. Receiving no answer, I picked one. Git installed ok.

I ran Git as per instructions and the source code for viewer was downloaded ok.

The instructions at the Rei site say to run Compile.bat once you've done the Git of the source files. The instructions fail to say that you have to run "runprebuild2008.bat" before Compile.bat exists. Once having run RunPreBuild2008, and then running the Compile.bat it produces, the viewer does get produced.

Both the prebuild and compile batch files produce enough warnings and messages of various sort to make you feel sure the process has failed.

Having now successfully built the viewer, I ran the standalone version, which worked.

Then I opened an html file made for testing the viewer in the browser. The browser in this case is Internet Explorer 8. I go to the OpenSim site to get the login information needed to log in to their opensim grid.

The Rei viewer opens, but crashes instantly.

I've logged in several times, and it's crashed several times. My avatar is a male avatar, and I don't see how to change that. Bummer.

The interface is pretty crude.

I just found some icons that appear when you mouse over the chat balloon icon that appears near the top of the viewer display area. Then it crashed again.

Binary files for "Rei", open source in-browser OpenSim viewer now available

Binary installers for the "Rei" open source OpenSim in-browser viewer are now available at http://github.com/3di/3di-viewer-rei/downloads for IE and Firefox, so if you want to try accessing OpenSim from your browser, you can do so without having to download or compile the source code.
