so I'm filming a sim from above and after a certain elevation, the water looks pretty yucky and low quality. You don't see the beautiful reflections capable in windlight when you are high and above the sim.

I am probably going to green screen all the water and put in my own water, but anyone have any suggestions for an easier route?

Have you tried changing the settings for the water?

You can change the colour of the water, the top reflective layer, the amount of haze, reflection, refraction size and direction, wave/ripple sizes, speed and direction....

You can save all the changes into 'Profiles', so why not make your shoot, freeze frame, change to settings you made which give you better water, and continue.

On that basis, is maybe possible to make the sea as close to a single colour as possible, and chroma screen. The biggest challenge would be to get it to a single colour, as removing a range from a single colour will effect other colour balances. That is going to be your biggest hurdle when chromo keying without using All Bright, as it is not available on water colours. All Bright BTW, fixes a single colour and does not allow for refractions from changing the colour shade, depending on the position of the sun.

You know you can alter the water light map? Not just the texture of the water, but everything about it :) I've spent hours making up templates for shoots... I explore the scene, then adjust all the various settings, then save the templates giving them names for each scene. It is worth the effort for what you are trying to acheive.
