AWM, please *stop* using activeX for your website. It serves absolutely no good purpose.

Guess what, I do website design. Talk to me about redesigning yours.

Come on, Geuis. 1998 was such a cool year for web design. No CSS. Every font tag had their list of fonts. And there was no need for good design. Don't pick on Mars because he chooses to use the web equivalent of the Farrah Fawcett haircut :D

LOL... what a bunch of whinnies.. thanks for the comments on the movie.. I 'dumb' down the website so those still on crawlup can at least see something.. anyways.. if you want to see it realtime, you can find it in our showroom ingame or at the 666 club. I really don't see the problem with ActiveX anyways... it's a way to keep everyones QuickTime upto date. Many that try to watch movies ingame are still using version 4 fps (For Petes Sake).
I'm not hosting any of my movies on youtube etc... they wreck the quality.

Oh BTW skribe... your comments are off topic and you 'should' edit it out :p.. and keep them to the thread topic I posted, and , Fire Fox? thats borked.. it wont play any media so I junked it. I reinstalled Quicktime Pro, FF etc.. best place for that cr*p, is in the hands of geeks that keep shouting what a great peice of sh*t it is..... same time they are tweeking their 286 to use SL.

here... load that into ur qt http://www.wba-advertising.com/sabby/666a_mp4.mov

Hey AWM --

Just watched the video...Wild!

Btw, the problem with Firefox viewers has nothing to do with ActiveX, it's simply
the object code you're using:

This is where the problem is:

< embed src="poster.mov"
qtsrc="http://www.wba-advertising.com/sabby/666a_mp4.mov"
width="360" height="375" target="myself" controller="true" autoplay="true" >

This is supposed to force a browser to use a QT no matter what the file. But
since it's a mov file, just let the browser handle it

embed is for Mozilla/Firefox...so just do this:

< embed src="http://www.wba-advertising.com/sabby/666a_mp4.mov"
width="360" height="375" target="myself" controller="true" autoplay="true" >

Worth a try.

Cheers,
- Infrared

Dude, for someone who likes to toot their own horn about the massive amounts of investment and knowledge that WBA puts into hosting content, doing video production, etc, your actual knowledge of web browsers, standards, and streaming media via the web seems to be non-existent.

Not trying to be critical or anything, but you gotta get with the times. Upwards of 20-25% of people use Firefox and non IE6 browsers. 5% of the world market uses Mac OS X, where Safari and Firefox are the predominant browsers. Your website, and your quicktime streams, are broken for 70-75% of the people that are likely to try and watch your content.

You can be very, very sure that your target audience of people can more than handle a modern web browser and especially do not need your forced, broken hand-holding in regards to the version of the software on their computers.

In regards to ActiveX, you seem to forget that most people that DO use IE6 and 7 have installed Service Pack 2 that came out 3-4 years ago, which pretty much BLOCKS ActiveX from running in the first place, unless the user specifically allows it. So your "quicktime detection system" doesn't work ANYWAY.

Please, learn about Flash encoding. What's really nice about it is that Flash MX studio will do high-quality flash encoding from Quicktime media almost automatically. Just tweak it.

And the last point I want to make, is just freaking use Blip.tv. I agree, Youtube blows junks. Blip.tv doesn't. Upload your content to there. Not only do they do high-quality flash encoding automatically, they also allow people to view the original Quicktime movie if they want to. You're not locked in using Blip, unlike Youtube.

This is machinima, not an HD movie being shot with a Red camera being shown in on a digital IMAX screen. After a certain level, the perceived video quality you're trying so hard to maintain simply doesn't exist.

You're missing the most important point. Make your content available to the most people. Right now, you are failing in this.

Well well well... and I mistakenly thought this was a machinima forum... and not a webdesign forum.. its true I am not a webdesigner, never professed to be, but.... when it comes to hosting and streaming media for SL, which IS what WBA do, along with making movies in and out of SL.. then I do know my stuff. As far as the code to run QT on a webpage, I didn't dream that up, I got it from the 'horses mouth' Apple. Perhaps I should pass on the comments to them.
With regards to flash streaming, I use the full Macromedia MX package, Flash and Fireworks I cut my teeth on, dreamweaver is ok, I love the layers.... Flash streaming I was doing since version 1.0... but its cr*p for SL, which is what we are about. My own personal website is all flash streamed, music, movies etc. I also host 2 'Worlds' there as well... these are similar to SL Sims.

Thanks for the heads up Infrared, I'll certainly give that a serious go, very useful.

Now, I'd be happy to hear any comments about the movie... that would be refreshing. Great to hear you enjoyed it Infrared, I have a 2nd installment coming real soon.... I post the direct link to the file, as I appear to be the only one of 280,000+ hits we get on our crappy website each month, that can actually see movies there. The stats show less than 2% using anything other than IE, guess they are wrong as well..... have a great one.

Another 'wild' movie.. it's a 'pre-wedding' section that the actual wedding movie will be added to, we call it the courtship section.

I did get FF to work with a webpage using the code you gave graciously Infrared :) although it wouldn't work for IE, and I don't want to create seperate webpages, as joint code on the same page didn't work either. I'll be looking into a way to combine them.

So here is the direct link to put into QT http://www.wba-advertising.com/sabby/prewedding_mp4.mov
Please note there are no credits applied to this movie for the sound track used, as this will be added to the final cut. Type O Negative - Love You To Death, is the artist and song, by using the link to the movie, you accept/acknowlege the artist and copyright of material.

Hey AWM --

Just watched the wedding pre-story. Great camera work in the beginning...
the rain/fog on the street was a very nice effect...wish my hardware could
run SL that smooth. =)

* * *

irt embedding qt, I've prepared a page which shows a Quicktime
video (mov) to users of FF/Mozilla and IE6/7.

There's a better way to do this with a javascript wrapper (to
avoid ActiveX prompts in IE7) , but this code works fine without
it and it's threadbare simple. View the source.

Btw, the demo MOV I used is a short audio clip from Pulp Fiction dramatized
via typography which might be of interest to all machinimists...

Thanks for that... I'll play with that code.. and if all is good, apply it throughout the website :¬)

The movies were both made with particles set at 5k+ to maximize the effects, to capture the fog in the background and fire pulses in the foreground, I used 256mtr draw distance at a resolution of 1024x1024 but set fog to 2.0 range which helps produce a fuzzy cutoff point.. the lens flare was added at post production stage using an alpha mask so the avatar would interfer with the light stream. The fog/mist was created using a bank of 6 fog machines ingame, its been on my wishlist to make a shot scene like that for a while.
Flycam still needs some work... it works.. but mainly with very slow movements.....

Hi MARS

MARS I watched your movies - I have no technical feedback to offer but it seems you have plenty from others.

Aesthetically your clips were well thought out and planned. They look like you put a lot of work into creating them.

They are visually exciting, dramatic and very creative.

ps: I didn't know you had such a wild and crazy dancing avatar!

:) now again the animal goes out in me LOLOL.. j/k...
What I enjoyed so much about those movies, was the informality and 'poetic license' I was allowed, from the client, to make them. For the most part, we make 'predictable movies' for clients, so this the equivilant of playtime for me. Glad you liked them.

After a great wedding on Sunday, I completed the movie set (what we call a Wedding Album consisting of Courtship, Wedding and Reception), I've made the links on the following page Fire Fox friendly.

The only thing I couldn't sort is presetting the volume control, so click the speaker icon on the player/window and drag the volume up.

Links on the page are:-
Club 666 - Club promo movie.
Courtship
Wedding
Reception

Those prefixed with a FF, are Fire Fox friendly, enjoy.

I have just polished up a few elements to some of the movies featured, hopefully they are seen as improvements :)
