OK just found this at youtube with a LindenResearch tag on it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NQg0J0kW4M0Now perhaps Im totaly out of the loop or this is another wannabe, but if you make SL feel and look like that without the need of a supercomputer, bring it on ! Gosh amagad **censur** that looks amazing.

This looks very much like the RealExtend version of SL. Or certainly their client (which does most of the work btw). As RealExtend's client is all part of the OpenSource development, no doubt the 'ray tracing' will become available to most platforms eventually. It isn't actually ray tracing, its more 'live shadows'. There were no reflections, light source refractions, only shadows and updated shaders, althought the 'Only' is somewhat muted.
Blue Mars has an equally impressive platform, although not open content (you can rez and glue some prims together and call it home). Runs on Cry2 physics engine, not Havok 4.
The animations, from what I can see in the blurry haze of YouTube quality, look like Mocap.
Either way, as a machinimast, it gets my jucies flowing.
If this was a DirectX platform, I would say, the graphics card upgrade, wouldn't be that heavy, but as its OpenGL..... well 'Unsupported GC's' will certainly have to bite the bullet.

Looks too RL to me, no furries or futuristic / RL defying builds

This pops up all the time, it's a bogus video that uses stolen video clips from various projects and tries to pass itself off as the next big thing. Usually used to get some quick VC cash and run.

Usually used to get some quick VC cash and run. Thats what I was gonna say; stop stealing my thoughts =p It basically looks like a continuation/reworked version of a video that was out a while ago. If I remember correctly, it was posted here and the topic creator called it the end of Second Life.

Blue Mars looked real nice from the trailer, are they in beta yet? Limited building though, that always seems to me, the defining factor between SL and everything else...

They are in Beta, I've signed up, just so I can get my movie camera in there. From what I see, there is no building, selling etc allowed directly. You have to become a 'Partner' to be able to sell items through their internal mechanisim (so no mall owners etc springing up) much like Sony Home, Twinity etc etc.. Buildings are created by the platform owners, so no prim gluing by the populous. I'm interested in seeing the physics engine, see if it is worth applying that to our own grids.

I'm rather new, was my first time I ascctualy looked up SL on youtube, guess I'll go back try to bake and pre-render my textures for now, would guess would be rather demanding on hardware with realtime caustic and raytracing on the level one would like it in.

Looks like the guy took the video down- so its definitely a fake. I'm interested in knowing where the footage is from , though. Anyone know?

Apart from the 'eye candy' elements, anyone notice how the majority of the avatars were seated and resembling bots? Those that were actually moving, looked like they were also bots on a recursive animation/script (watch the guy walking by the pool).
Unless someone has managed a HUGE breakthrough, by introducing raytracing into an OpenGL platform such as OpenSim, it has a high probablity of being a fake. One of the 'limitations' is being able to create raytracing/light maps on the fly with an open content type platform such as SL/OpenSim. Simply because of its unpredicability, and the computational power required. One work round would be for the region/sim owner to 'freeze' the light map update, while constructing, when completed, turn it back on. This would effectively rebake the whole scene. Best guess, even a small update to the scene, would take a longtime to recreate the updated light map, when you consider refractions/reflections of alpha textures, shinny, mirror and atmospheric interactions.
Even allowing someone to drop a single prim, with 'on the fly raytracing' enabled, would stall the whole sim and everyone on, adjoining the sim (child agents). Our systems and the internet itself, simply would not cope with the data surge, let alone SL/OpenSim.
