I did this last year for Philcon, a regional science fiction conference in Philadelphia. Here's what I used successfully:
  1. QuickTime Streaming Server running at the hosting company
  2. QuickTime Broadcaster running on a MacBook Pro
  3. Video source: internal iSight camera (tried external--had issues)
The MBP was also running the SL client to feed the virtual component back into the panel room. It may be possible to use other methods, but this is what I knew worked and it worked for me.

The external video had a problem in that some residents were seeing the video upside down. Later I had reports that turning off video streaming in preferences, applying it, then turning it back on fixed it.

Hope this helps,
Gwydion

P.S. Normally I like FireFox. Right now I want to shoot it for throwing out my first response: Command (Apple) - left arrow should move to the beginning of the edit line, per Apple's standard human interface. Instead, it moved to the previous page and I completely lost my first response. sigh (/venting)

we did this at my college for a presentation. a camera was set up to record the presenters, which was then being sent via streaming video to a server. The stream was linked to a video screen in SL, and the video had about a 30 second delay. It might be hard for casual users to get all this technology set up, but "live" video is possible.

!! lol i do this all the time too... i just flashed on maybe trying messing with osx's keyboard preferences and setting up a custom firefox set that maybe can cancel that key input. dunno if it works, but might be worth a try...

hey guys nice thread i think getting live video into SL is definatly cool. since im not on a mac i set up the windows flavor of the Darwin streaming server. and went looking for diff caping apps that will output a real live stream to a relay on a qts server. ran across one called wirecast. it all works well tho just a few settings to get your files streaming, gotta use the .sdp file thats relayed to the server so in media links inworld use the .sdp :)

pretty neat stuff i just rezed a cube on my head and streamed my webcam onto my SL body hehe was like a RL2SL transplant! was going to stream in my tv cap card to watch a lil tv but the program wirecast only talked to my cap card over dshow, and dshow doesnt take hold of the tuner only was reading the svideo or component in. but thats ok i can hook up an external tuner like a vcr and stream tv in that way over dshow.

but if you guys know some other programs that will broadcast qtss compliant streams/files let us know here in this thread.

i was running all those programs all at once and serving all from one pc on 1 connection so it was a tinny laggy about 30 seconds or less in delay time. i am running a dual core but it was still taxed as it should be with that kind of load.

but now i am going to set up darwin and the video cap on seperate machines in house. but im thinking of getting a remote host for the qt server so bandwidth is not fighting between SL and uploading a stream to X amount of users. for the most part theres only like 3 or 4 people max hanging out at any time so im not really worried if im streaming a low bitrate video to a couple friends. if you guys know of cheap qtss host's let us know here as well.

this could be great for presentations, entertainment and just weird crazy stuff. like i was thinking i could set up my own play lists on my server with tons of different 3d comerical/Ads i can make for my own store with outside apps like 3dsmax. then i can have a sort of long loop of ads maybee even video descriptions of each item for sale. stuff like that theres alot that could be done but i think bandwidth has to be taken in as a key factor since were not all on fiber and SL is heavy on bandwidth. dont get me wrong tho i totaly understand why its heavy and with good reason.

i also tried vlc but i couldnt get a qtss compiant stream out of it. if you guys know any settings to get it to work please let us know here :)

but still its perty neat to walk around my own parcel with my real face in allmost real time on my SL body hahahaha.
