I have an island in SL, College Life - secondlife://College%20Life/97/75/39 I am streaming in the Metanomics TV via their kiosk. I have the stream set to the correct address ( http://streams.slcn.tv/metanomics.mov) and I can see the movie when I open the URL in a browser. I have the media type set to Movie (video/quicktime) Others too can see it when they come to my land. I have my SL client set to play streaming music and media - and to do it automatically (all three boxes ticked). BUT I CAN'T SEE THE MOVIE! No matter what I try (and I've tried a while!). I have the latest version of Quicktime. I just can't work it out. The media texture is a grey - when I come within range it goes black and tells me that it is playing the movie - but I can't see or hear it. If I press "srop" on the movie controls it goes back to grey - so it's trying to do something... I'm running Windows Vista Premium 64 bit. I've tried this with Firewall on and off. I've stopped McAfee - makes no difference. Can anyone help. Many, many thanks.

Web Proxy?

This might be to do with the proxy settings for your Quicktime client, especially if you're seeing the problem from inside your College network. Your browser will be set to use your corporate proxy, I presume that Quicktime will use the browser settings when it's started by the web browser and may not be picking up those settings when it's started by the SL viewer.

I had this problem too and I ended up just getting the free SLCN modem from @Home TV. It is on one of the higher shelves. I also use the TV from there but it might work with any TV. I think Torley Linden has a tutorial on this. http://www.youtube.com/user/Torley?recommended=0Good luck..I love SLCN.

I've heard more and more about ppls not seeing movies in sl... it may have something to do with LL's policy of phishing media urls, hence why I now get a short delay to my streams from our own servers, which I know, never suffered previously. You can overcome this 'parental handholding' of LL's, by using a Silver Stream Media system, it bypasses standard media parcel functions and is more akin to a browser when delivering media to your client.
You may also find out if media streaming is blocked by your service provider, they may throttle connections, which can mean that while you can see the media using a internet browser, which has massively lower overheads to the bandwith, is increased when using media streaming into the ilkes of SL's client. Remember that SL is a 3D environment and media over the internet browser doesnt have to cope with rendering onto distorted veiwing screens.
Internet browsers also use ActiveX controlled pluggins, SL's client doesnt... it uses a kiosk template.

Thanks for the input everyone. I think I have the cause now. After much mucking about I have video working on my land that I can see - if I log in from my old machine. It's Vista 64 and quicktime that seem to be at the root of this - they just don't work together with Second Life. I'll have another trawl through the web - others must have this same problem - if any of you know a Vista guru please point him or her my way.
Many, many thanks for all the helpfull contributions along the way - if I can find the answer I'll post it back here.
Thanks again CCN Yifu.

I use Vista and make movies in SL, and I can see them.
There is a ActiveX error 46 issue with Vista which can prevent the QT player operating. The only way to get the pluggin to work is to run the installer as Administrator (right click the installer programme and choose 'run as administrator', I also found that I had to set all the component programmes as full admin rights.
It seems MS have decided the best way to get people using their own media formats is to bork 3rd parties programmes. Apple do not offer any solution or even recognition of the issue, despite searching their website for the error 46, only brings up forums topics, that remain unanswered or addressed by Apples tech teams. MS have no information about the issue either. It would appear both are ingoring the issue.
It is a pain to have to reboot into XP to get the player to function, even though I did manage to get the pluggin to work under Vista in SL.
