You have to record with something. You could run video out to a camcorder.* Why would you not want to use a video recording program?

*Depending upon the specifics of the computer and camcorder, of course.

If you don't have money to spend try the free CamStudio, XFire, or WeGame programs. CamStudio is what I'd pick, I think, although they all have their points.

At least that's what I hear for the Mac.

"Are there other options for Win screen capture besides Fraps? I have heard good reports about Hypercam3, but have not tried it. I have also seen recommendations about the open source program, CamStudio. " -- from my Faq web page:
http://thinkerer.org/VideoTech/VidtechFAQ.htm#software_for_a_Mac

I have gathered there all the info I have run into on subject like this.

The free Fraps is limited that way - the one you buy is not limited at all.

Control-Shift-F1 toggles the UI.

If you want to buy a program Fraps is great, but the free CamStudio is also very good at no cost.

Viddermaker workshop:
http://thinkerer.org/VideoTech/VidtechCamEd.htm
and the associated FAQ page has all the info you need to get starterd, including help on Fraps, Windows Movie Maker, Audacity, and the Gimp. All these are free except for Fraps ($40 USD).
