I have a Pro blip tv account it costs 8 bucks a month, they recently put their back dashboard through an overhaul and have all sorts of syndication option you upload your video to blip, and it automatically syncs with Vimeo, Youtube, Flickr, Internet Archive, Facebook, Delicious, Myspace, Twitter, etc etc you get the point. It also converts videos for Itunes/Iphone and is playable in Second Life (hosted by blip too)

You can't go wrong, and I do not work for them :)

With the new non-quicktime options that will become available in SL soon to view video - this could be a very effective tool. I will have to wait for the new video plug-ins before I invest.

Not really, the format that Blip use, is useable in SL.

Look at the variety of codex that Quicktime can handle.. its quite varied, even with default settings. You can also play YouTube/Blip movies in SL, providing you don't use the flv version, but the original, providing its on the Quicktime list.

http://www.apple.com/quicktime/player/specs.html

There I've done the hardwork for you...

BTW QuickTime is a player, not a format or a codex... you do understand the differences between wrapper formats and codex?

All I know is that my quicktime keeps failing and then I cannot view films in SL. And I buy dozens of feature films in SL and its painful not to be able to see them anymore (since I went to VISTA). I would like the option to use a different player than quicktime in SL because of this.

Looking at my one blip.tv file, I see options for Embed, Share, and Subscribe.

The most promising looking one of those to my eyes is Embed.

Embed has options for Show Player, Legacy Player, and Wordpress.com.

Legacy Player looks like the optimal choice of those three.

Legacy Player gives three fields to set choices in: Player Mode, Preferred Format, and Click To Play.

Precisely how to use those to determine what url to use in SL is not immediately apparent to me.

This is a file I uploaded a while ago. I think, if memory serves, I did at that time know how to get url for use in SL, but I don't now. I may have just forgotten, or it might only be available in an obvious manner at the time of uploading, or they may have changed how their system works.

Incidentally, if the ability to use their files in SL depending on Legacy Player support, take note of the following notice from Blip.TV:

From: someone
Warning: The Legacy Player has a number of limitations, including very limited advertising support. We may stop supporting the Legacy Player soon.

I tried digging the url out of one of the embed codes from the choices listed above, and it didn't work.

I then at the Blip.tv site did Dashboard, Episode, then clicked on Episode Details for the desired video, then down near the bottom of the page was a link labeled Source that had what looked like the exact same url as the one I dug out of the embed code.

This time when I pasted the url into the land media field in SL it worked.

I'm fairly certain the first url that didn't work was identical to the one used on the second try that does now work, but I have no way to check other than the saved list of urls, which now shows two identical urls in the list.

Maybe I can get someone from Blip.TV interested in catering to Second Life. I'll send some correspondence. Couldn't hurt.

Thanks for the research Sue:-)

Guys, if you have a Quicktime file already, an MOV you upload it to Blip.TV it will convert it to flash as the main file, but on the right hand side of the video pages you see an expandable menu called Files in which it will give you the complete URL to the MOV file that you uploaded and can link directly to your SL Parcel.

If you have a Pro account there is an option to convert to M4V which also works in second life, and on mobile phones and is pretty decent quality and seems to load on "play" with little or any delay on my end anyway, but I have pretty good broadband.
