I'd like to film my avatar walking or running towards the camera, does anyone know how I can do that without using someone else as a cameraman?

You can script an object that lets you programmatically control the camera functions. I think there is a script in the Camera section of lslwiki.org that does what you need.

Walking backwards (Down Arrow) is one way.

That works for me, although not with all AO's. It doesn't work with the freebie walk replacer I used to have, it does work with my current AO (from Kitten's Kreations).

There's attachments out there that make the AV walk automatically (without need to hold down keys) through some scripted physics. One such attachment would be "Walk and Talk" by Timeless Prototype.

When the AV is made walk through this method, you can easily move the camera to any spot in world and see them move past camera, towards it or whatever way you need ^^;

Run two clients on your PC and use an alt to capture the shot?

I'd go with with AWM's suggestion as well. I remember fiddling with the debug settings for camera controls to get the effect I wanted and was suprised to find it was hard to revert back to my default camera angels , thus forcing me to re-install (BAH!). also, you could convince some other perosn to change thier appearnce to look just like you and then get the satisfaction of directing them :D
