Hello, i would like to know what kind of video settings can permit me to reproduce a 4 mins movie into sl...
I have a 37 secs .MOV clip, edited with Adobe Premiere: H264, 360x240, A-Law 2:1, stereo 32 kHz at 15 fps. It came out 11.57 MB heavy and i uploaded on a free web-space.
It take some minutes before start reproducing in SL...
A 4 minutes long movie will be much more heavy and it will take some hours to start reproducing into Second Life :-(
Do you have any idea about the way to produce a 4 mins clip that can starts in a reasonable time in SL?
My OS is Windows and i don't have QuickTime Pro. I have only the ordinary quicktime.

I think you want to stream into SL. If so, you can post a .mov file on Blip.tv, put the url for the video on the media line of land you control, set your viewer for media, set a texture as the screen --
takes a long time to load, but streaming is free. If you do much of it you may want to find a better host (not free).

Yes Thinkerer, the problem is that it takes too much time to load and start streming into second life... Also with Blip.tv...

Oh you are?.... where have I been lol...

To put you on the right track of further reading, choose the right codex and settings. Forget H.264 it isn't that good and not really intended for 'progressive download' which is what you need. If you prepare the movie correctly, it will take as long to start, as it takes to fill your QuickTime cache (which you can set yourself in the QT preferences).

I've been asked many times how to get high quality media to fast start and play in SL. There is more than one part to the answer. As we (WBA-Advertising) run our business utilising the many days of research, as much as I like to help anyone, I cannot give away one of the fundemental assets of our business.

I can tell you that you need to acheive a data rate of less than 100kbps for the average user in SL to see the movies. Forget using heavy settings on codex like MP4, simply because although you may squeeze the data bit rate down to that figure or less, the quality will drop dramatically, and the CPU will have more work to do decoding the stream before it will render.

Our techniques include stacking codex profiles (5 in total) within the compressed stream header, this is then matched with our OS on our servers, which again, are not simple website hosting server setups. The 2:1 ratio audio codex you are using, can be bettered to a 4:1 ratio codex which will reduce the audio stream element and help you acheive the balance between quality and streaming, as music codex take little CPU time.

If you use high codex settings, to test the loading on the client, press Ctrl+Shift+2 this brings up a dynamic barchart. The lime green (UpdateTexture) is the movie rendering loading. What you should be looking to acheive is around 20-25% loading as a maximum. When viewers complain about lag, it may not always be the data bit rate, but the rendering loadings on the client.

Whilst on the subject, look out for any sculpties within range of your screen. They load the client with a 15fps refresh rate, unless you sync your movie fps with the sculpties (interlacing), all you will do is create an additive effect to the loadings on the client, which people will associate to your movie stream.
