Hey guys, recently I've been trying to figure out a way to get the movies on my HD (ripped from my DVD's for portable use). I've been reading the forums and usually its hard to pin someone down with a link of a web server that will let you stream a 1.5 hr + movie to SL. I've got the movies, converted from .avi to .mov, but when it comes to actually finding the server I need to stream it to SL so that it's simply hit play on your media player and watch... if someone could please post a nice little list of helpful servers, I would appreciate it greatly ^.^ Free preferable, but any would be helpful.

depends in what country you live wether you can have a backup, in the uk you are allowed to have one backup copy. but, streaming it is illegal as its an audience view.

I don't think your limitation for the length of the movie is an issue, more the data bit rate. Best check with the run of the mill webhosts whether they allow streaming (progressive download) of QuickTime media (not to be confused with RTSP), although if setup right, it will work with most webhosts.
Where you will run into issues, bandwidth...
Assuming your movie has a Data Bit Rate of say 1mbps, you have to consider the following:
1) The amount of people that watch it at the sametime/day. 1mbps times the amount of viewers = bandwidth usage. Check your webhost bandwidth allowances. If you go over, the additional bandwidth can be quite expensive.
2) The total bandwidth usage constantly. Whilst most webhost packages seem quite good, some claiming unlimited bandwidth etc etc, in reality, you are always sharing resources, including the bandwidth network pipelines. Imagine everyone in your town turning on a hosepipe at the sametime. Water pressure drops due to demand. Although not quite as simple, as it also includes packets, latencies etc, the end result could mean a lot of stop/restarting of the movie, even if it is just you watching it.
3) Persistant streams cost money. Webhosts for a couple of bucks a month, work on the basis you are hosting a couple of html pages and pics of your aunty flo.

Buying bandwidth is not as straight forward as it may seem. If the webhost package is cheap, good chance you get what you pay for. For real power, you might consider a Dedicated server, with good resources such as Burst Ram, 100mbps Ethenet connection, SATA Raid HD setups. Even after all that though, you still transverse the internet.

Before you complain to a webhost about bad streaming, always setup sever pings across the globe, the bottleneck maybe your very own connection.

You could try the likes of YouTube.. although to be honest, I doubt you will even be able to upload the whole file, and would probably draw attention to yourself.. which under the potentail circumstances, you may not want.
