Did I read the update list correctly on the latest client that Linux users now have media streaming facilities???? If this is correct, is their pluggin QT compatible. If not, what format can they use?

Well I entered the realms of the Linux forums and returned unscathed, but wiser..... apparently they have a couple of programmes which are used as a pluggin, that support a whole raft of codex... many of which support movies from the QT pluggin, so no changes needed. Like most things Linux... they don't want it to work out of the box... so many are having to virtually write code to fix things.... how else would they have it?

I saw somewhere how to get it to work, but I have no use for that feature, so I skipped it.
If you check the errors from where you started SL, you will see the url to the stream, so you can
play it with mplayer if you must.

Why don't SL use ogg instead of quicktime ?
Then it could be played with an embedded player, the same for all OS.

My sole interest was to find out what and if the new media abilities of the lunix client, would be compatible with all the machinima we do as a company in SL. I would dread to think that they used some odd codex format, which if we were to support the lunix users, may have resulted in producing 2 sets of each movie.

However, from what I discovered, Lunix users have the codex that are compatible, it's just the way they have to install them.

Using mplayer to play movies, would effectively be a step backwards. The SL Client has a QuickTime pluggin, and movies will show quite neatly ingame on bespoked screens, maintaining the usage of the VR Environment, as opposed to shrinking the client and watching it on your desktop.

Just because the client uses QT as a pluggin, most users still need to not only keep QT updated, but also make the file types associated to the relative codex used in media for SL. Not having mp4 selected for instance will mean you cannot see those movies made using the mp4 codex. Both mplayer and QT fight for associations for these file types for commercial reasons. You have to set them in the Quick Time preferences, along with a small cache to help prevent stuttering/stalling of the movie streams. Setting the bandwidth too high in SL preferences, effectively will leave little bandwidth left for streaming media, as it has no association with the bandwidth used by SL. The media streams are controlled seperately by the OS. SL's Client renders the finished decoded movie streams.
