Who has good experience with what software? Want to make simple videos of my experiences in SL to begin with and go from there.

And I see on the SL interface itself under 'file' the possibility to record movies to disk but I cant get it to do anything.

Thanks.

Don't even bother with the built in capture. Download Fraps for free here:

Your experience with the SL native capture has been widely replicated. Here is my 6 step program to get you started on vidder making:

Fraps is a good programme for most things, personally I prefer HyperCam, as it allows for creating a screen region window of any size, and using a hot key, you can drag it about realtime, about the screen. It has quite a few other functions such as defineable cursor behaviour and captures sound in quite a few formats.

So it all worked, and I've posted several clips, but how do I improve the quality of the what shows up on youtube?

Short of doing all the experiments myself, can anyone suggest ways to improve?

I have Fraps, use Windows movie maker and then upload.

Thanks,

That certainly provides high quality, but it does require the DivX Web Player, which not everyone will have (and there is no Linux version it seems).

For a straight Flash player site, I use http://www.vimeo.com/ - the videos are larger, and of higher quality than YouTube and Google Video I find. It also lets people download the source file directly and the interface is much nicer than either's.
