A movie I made of the Hotel Dare show that was hosted by Nex-Core.

http://www.wba-advertising.com/hoteldare/hotel_dare_nc.html

It is deliberately converted to greyscale, and the effects used are to emphasise the models and create a depth of field, using a mask I made up.

Comments invited as always.

Fantastic work - I especially like the lighting effects you used in the beginning (Sony Vegas?) :)

Hi James,

Thanks for your comments. Yes I use Sony Vegas... although I use the Ultimate version, most of the effects I use, except some of the masks, you can find in the standard version.

The spotlight effect comes from the Bump Mapping FX, set the bump map to 0 and choose a Omnidirectional spot, playing with the various effects along the timeline, making key markers to control what happens in the scene. Using 'shinnyness' and 'bump height' (not bump mapping) to control the range of the spot light, into the depth of feild. Along with intensities and ambience.

What perhaps didn't come out that well in the movie, in the scene where the brazier is, I included a crackling fire sound, which I panned across with the scene movement. It maybe because I tried a different audio codec this time lol.

In case anyone is wondering.. I didn't shoot this movie at the live show, due to other commitments on the day. We did however have an opportunity 2 days later.

From my understanding, on the day, the lag was impossible, so maybe it was a good thing.

I know from experience how focused many of those involved are during a show, and never really get to see the show. These films are perhaps the only way they can. At that point, they can enjoy their skills. :)

I enjoy making them and see the movie as a tribute to the group at Nex-Core, who work incredibly hard to create a unique theme for every show. Some movies we extend the show and make it into a story.

To offer clarity, the greyscale sections of the movie are deliberate, as is the lack of smoothing the movements, which I normally do.

The theme for the show (chosen by the show producers) was cheap and out of control. I shot the movie in a different framerate that I actually rendered the movie in. In doing so, this caused the speeded up motions, which I emphasised using strong and swift movements of the camera.
I did play with an old film mask, but this didn't produce the look I was after. I wanted the camera/film to look cheap and perhaps out of control as well. To finish that off, I restrained the output to a set kbps, which clipped several sections, to make them fuzz, it also introduced some pixelation.
The only other mask I would have tried, but didn't, would be to create a snoot and apply a gausian blur to the surrounding area, creating the effect of an old camera lens. That maybe have been going too far...
